Just seen it on Twitter. Tough one as it looks like the player
has only got eyes for the ball. However I’d probably lean more
towards a red when you take into account the force of it making
it more excessive than reckless, it’s serious foul play.

originally thought was a yellow but now I’ve seen it back he
missed it and was near too it maybe too close, I hope he watches
it back and realises it, player has broken ribs

Yeah I agree, maybe if he sees it back he can learn from it
maybe it’s one of those on another day another refereee would
have given it a straight red

Tranmere Rovers FC v Shrewsbury Town FC
Football League 2
Referee: O'Connor, Jamie
Assistant Referee: Cooke, Thomas
Assistant Referee: Raper, Lewis
Fourth Official: Chadwick, Jonathan
My first viewing of Mr O'Connor taking charge of a game. In
appearance, he had a passing resemblance of a smaller version of
Rob Jones. Seemed to have decent fitness and be well-positioned.
He also was willing to communicate with the players explaining
his decisions and the good use of hand signals helped keep
spectators in the picture. He was alert to potential head
injuries stopping play quickly in those situations. The key
match incident was called correctly in my view, a second YC for
Shrewsbury's Boyle, swinging out an elbow which caught Davison
in the face, barely a minute after the first YC for a foul
tackle. Mr O'Connor blew for the challenge promptly, but allowed
himself a bit of thinking time before producing the cards.
My feeling is the area Mr O'Connor needs to work on is foul
detection. He blew up for some minimal contact or when the
beneficiary had engineered the contact, but let some stronger
challenges go unmarked, when there was no obvious advantage. The
perception from home supporters was that had worked to the
favour of the visitors, so despite Tranmere being comfortably
ahead at the break, there was some booing as the officials left
the pitch. Obviously, I don't endorse that. However, the referee
was well-placed to nip a couple of flash-points in the bud and
never looked in danger of losing control, so arguably a better
approach could have been to let all minor contact go. However,
it would have more consistent to penalise all minor contact by
both teams, than the course followed.
There was no embargo on ARs using their flags to signal fouls,
and both used this sparingly. As far as I could tell, Messrs
Cooke and Raper got all calls correct.
