Replacing An Injured Official

So what does Mr. Woodman expect to happen? I wonder what better
solutions he has, if any, when a Match Official is injured
during the game and unable to continue.

"It was an embarrassing situation for the referees' management,
to have to ask for someone to come out of the crowd to get the
game going. I've never known that in my life."
I can only assume Mr Woodman hasn't attended many football
matches. Or maybe he just doesn't pay much attention to what is
going on.

If the Clubs are willing to pay for the attendance of a 5th
Official at every match then such "embarrassment" may be
avoided. Where is Jimmy Hill when you need him to step in and
run a line ?

If the Clubs are willing to pay for the attendance of a 5th
Official at every match then such "embarrassment" may be
avoided. Where is Jimmy Hill when you need him to step in and
run a line ?

With all due respect to Mr. Woodman and League two teams across
the country, do we really want another 46 match officials each
week taken away from actually officiating to sit in the stands
of Premier League and EPL grounds to act as a reserve fourth
official?
Apart from the cost, the trickle down effect deprives another 46
park games of a referee each week.
Having said that, I foresee the Premier League going down this
route pretty soon - probably with a Reserve AR. In that league,
money talks and - in that league - it shouts pretty loudly.

Some former match officials and players might be profitably
employed rolling the wicket at Lord's.

Do we really need to replace a 4th official immediately though?
Agreed, it would be more work for AR1, but steps 3 to 7 manage
without them.
There’s enough TV cameras at games to spot anyone being a eejit
in the dugout for the odd few occasions this happens a season.
As this injury happened in the first half, a replacement
official could have been sought for the 2nd half, giving the
referee half time to explain to the new official what needs to
be done.
Let’s be honest, the primary role of a 4th official is to take
over from an incapacitated official. The rest of it is
peripheral
That being said, I thoroughly enjoyed my 4th official
appointments when I was on the system and my big break came from
coming out of the crowd to line 77 minutes of what would now be
a step 2 game, just 10 days after getting my class 1 (I’m
showing my age now!), so who am I to moan about Mr Cork getting
his 5, or should I say 64, minutes of glory.

What then happens if one of the remaining three go down though?
Whilst I agree it isn't that likely, it did happen at Millwall a
few years ago where the L5 referee taken from the crowd to be
4th official pretty quickly ended up on the line after a second
of the original match officials pulled a muscle.

Perhaps Mr Woodman would have been happier with the game being
abandoned instead and having to add a rescheduled, midweek game,
and all the associated costs, logistics and further "disruption"
to the players?
Or would he be wanting to pay for extra reserve officials?
Ordinarily, of course, an injured Ref or AR would swap places
with the 4th. It is not often that such injuries occur, and
therefore even less often that injuries occur that are serious
enough to render the official unable to continue in even the
4tth role.
