I didn't expect Steven McLean to get the big game at Tynecastle
this weekend, however the SFA are maybe keeping the other "big
hitters" aside for games between Hearts and Celtic later in the
season, should they still be challenging each other at those
points. McLean is experienced enough, and good enough, that he
should be a safe pair of hands for Sunday though. Also on
Sunday, everyone's favourite assistant makes his top flight
return at Pittodrie.

Thanks again, ArabRef!
I have to agree about Steven McLean being a bit of a surprise
(though he seems to have come through the match unscathed). I
saw him in person in Kilmarnock v Ross County in January on a
cold and dreary afternoon which summed up the match and his
performance. He seemed, slightly, ‘off the pace’.
More recently I saw Nick Walsh in Kilmarnock v St Mirren and he
was excellent - which makes the lack of European appointments
all the more baffling.
Last week for Kilmarnock v Hearts Ross Hardie, to my mind,
reacted - positively - to the situation with Derek McInnes’
return to his former managerial post. No trivial, pedantic fouls
and he let quite a lot ‘go’ while always keeping close to play
and a ‘lid on things’.
I do wish we’d see more new blood and I’d like to see Lloyd
Wilson ‘live’. I wonder if Sean Murdoch is being lined up for
the odd premiership match and I do wish (unless for personal
reasons) Graham Grainger would get some games.

Will be interesting to see where the next elite referee comes
from.
Since the departure of Collum and Thomson, there seems to be a
big void emanating.

Nick Walsh would be my guess for the next elite referee but the
lack of European appointments recently for any of the Scottish
officials (outwith VAR) has been a bit of a surprise. I think
John Beaton is now seen as a fairly steady Category One official
by UEFA. He's been around long enough now that I don't think
he'll go any higher and similar can probably be said about Don
Robertson. Harder to tell with David Dickinson, Matthew
MacDermid and Ross Hardie given they've been on the
international list for a far shorter period of time.
I was at Tannadice yesterday and it was a fairly straighforward
afternoon for someone like Beaton and his two very experienced
assistants. Alastair Mather was right in line to call the St
Mirren goalkeeper handling outside his box for SPA, and other
than that there was only one other caution for a straightforward
case of SPA. Excellent VAR intervention from Gavin Duncan for a
penalty and SFP which to be fair to Beaton was extremely
difficult to spot in real time.
The VAR review show has highlighted a lot of issues with
Scottish referees but I always think Gavin Duncan comes across
very well when he features, with very calm and clear
communication.

Indeed so. At least they did have one European appointment in
the most recent round, Ross Hardie on a Youth League match. As
Observers, however, Scotland was well represented.
PS I echo Scottie's thanks!
