It does seem difficult to work out the strategy with some
officials. Grant Irvine and Iain Snedden were both getting
fairly regular Premiership games last season but have yet to
have one so far, whilst as you say Graham Grainger seemed to be
"demoted" without any obvious reason.
As for the FIFA badge, that could be interesting to see who gets
that. Ryan Lee and Duncan Nicolson seem to be getting pushed
quite quickly, making top flight debuts post-split last season.
Since the start of this season, they've also had 4th official
appointments in Europe and VAR/AVAR appointments domestically.
That doesn't guarantee anything in itself, but they wouldn't be
getting those if the SFA didn't see talent in them. (Ross Hardie
achieved his FIFA badge less than 12 months after his top flight
debut as well, so it's not unprecedented to have a quick rise)
Calum Scott is probably one other to keep an eye on. He made his
top flight debut back in 2023, but his appointments since have
steadily increased - including a Scottish Cup semi-final last
season. A slower rise than some others but you don't get a
national semi-final appointment without reason.

I wonder if the lack of Premiership matches prompted Craig
Napier to resign from the list at the turn of the year?
Is it Willie Collum who makes the appointments?

Did not Paul Robertson achieve promotion to the FIFA list
without ever having refereed a Premiership match? His enforced
retirement, apparently through injury, may even have meant that
he never did.

Not sure if it’s Collum himself who does the appointments but
I’d imagine he has some input, particularly at the top level.
You may be right about Craig Napier as well, given his last
Premiership middle was September and he resigned in
January/February. Although I know he was also a GP so maybe he
struggled to balance both of them. Not sure though so that’s
more speculation than anything else.

That’s an excellent appointment for David Dickinson at
Tynecastle. Hearts have the chance to go 5 points clear at the
top of the table if they win, with Celtic not playing until the
Sunday. Combine that with the 5.45pm kick off time on Saturday
and it could be a very lively atmosphere.

Thanks again ArabRef!
A slight digression . . . . . I know Nick Walsh (who I will see
'live' on Saturday) had a Europa League match last week but
should we be concerned about the lack of European matches for
John Beaton, Don Robertson, David Dickinson and Matthew
MacDermid?

I was slightly surprised that Nick Walsh is the only one to have
had a game in the European competitions so far. He seemed to get
on well at the u21 Euros during the summer, with a semi final
appointment, so UEFA clearly rate him. David Dickinson does have
a game in the Youth League this week, I believe.
There's only been two rounds of Champions/Europa League games so
far, and one Conference League round, so hopefully more
appointments follow as the season progresses.

Hugh Dallas no longer seems to have the pull since he stepped
back from committee duties. For succession planning you need
someone stepping up. Scotland should not be without an Elite
referee and others on his/her coat tail
