GER V ESP - Alves

Generally ok in first half. Good level of control and fitness.
As usual with Alves, needs to show more personality - like a
robot, always looks angry, never smiles.
Fell for a few soft, obvious non-fouls in favour of Spain which
she should have waved away.
Most noticeable was the new 8 seconds rule which she seems to be
ignoring completely. On several occasions, the German GK was way
over the time; twice it was 15/16 seconds and very clearly too
long. No good having this new rule, if top referees in a high
profile semi final simply ignore it!

Not impressed overall despite it being a pretty standard game to
referee. Not a fan of her style generally but obviously well
thought of. Very robotic and zero personality.
Played some good advantages and ARs good, but far too many soft
/ non-fouls given which should have been waved away. Players
sensed, especially Spain, if they were in a tough position that
they could just go down for a hopeful ‘foul’ and players were
getting frustrated. The odd times she did wave it away seemed to
be more obvious fouls - no clear line.
The 8-seconds rule completely abandoned and it became
embarrassing. Every time in second half onwards, the German GK
had at least 15 seconds and around 88 mins, the German GK twice
held on for 19/20 seconds, so long it was blatant, including one
time after having made the attacker run 40 yards to make her
pick it up.
Also blatant kicking ball away by Spain not long after scoring -
unsure, but suspect it could have been 2YC - and had to be given
in that situation when a team is chasing such an important
equaliser. Alves just ignored it.

Maybe it's just because she is concentrating very hard but Alves
certainly doesn't look as if she enjoys her officiating.

Just wondering, do you start when she has caught the ball,
before she flops to the ground? or do you wait until she is
standing but then waiting for the opposition to leave the area?

It’s when GK has control of the ball (basically from time no
player can take it off GK legally), so this includes the premier
league style, unnecessary flopping on the ball. In fact, there
was a recent IFAB law Q about exactly that. Onus is on GK to get
it in play - whole point is to speed it up and keep ball in play
longer. It didn’t help that Alves only started counting after
about 10secs and each second she signalled was about 3 secs in
reality! Even the players and crowd noticed it. It’s not a hard
rule to understand and a top fifa official should manage it
better, especially as it’s the first UEFA tournament with it in
use.
