       Robin Whitfield

       Sad to report the passing, at the age of 81 of Robin Whitfield,
       former Widnes Rugby League player, with subsequent spells at
       Barrow and Huyton. Despite being sent off seven times in his
       career, he turned to refereeing and rapidly rose to the top. He
       refereed three Challenge Cup finals in the eighties and early
       nineties as well as international fixtures, before reaching
       retirement age in 1994. A very fine referee indeed.

       Sad to hear, an excellent referee. By my reckoning the game has
       lost 4 of its legendary referees in the last 4 years -
       Whitfield, Fred Lindop, Billy Thompson and John Holdsworth.
       I know it’s not always helpful to compare refs from different
       generations but the current crop can’t hold a light to these
       guys in my opinion.
