Ivana Martincic - England v Italy (Euro SF)

I’ll admit I haven’t watched a lot of this tournament so I can’t
comment on the refereeing throughout the tournament but that was
probably the best officiating display I’ve seen in this
tournament from Ivana Martincic.
Didn’t see the first 20 minutes but during the rest she was
cool, calm and composed with all her decision making. I liked
the level of contact that she let go which made it a very
watchable game. Only brought out yellow cards when necessary.
Nice to see time wasting from the keeper punished before the
80th minute - as soon as she saw it she punished it.
Plus, I thought the biggest decision of the game, the penalty
incident at the end, she got spot on. It probably wouldn’t get
given in the prem - as we seem to let rugby tackles go at set
pieces. But there was clear sustained holding on the England
attacker causing her to go to ground. A clear penalty for me.
The smallest complaint that I have, which comes with a question
- is the 8 second rule for GK’s in place in this competition?
Mainly as there seemed to be a couple of times when the Italy
keeper had the ball in her hands for 10/12 seconds.
Overall, a very strong solid performance in the first semi final
of this Euros. Well done

Thought she had an excellent game. Let game flow and very alert;
was on to Italian dark arts very quickly. Haven’t really seen
replay of penalty but seemed at least supportable - looked like
a deliberate block live. Didn’t overreact to anything and YCs
spot on. ARs very good too.
Italy chose classic 1-0 tactic of trying to hang on for 45 mins
so have little sympathy!

I thought she was very good too. A minor point but felt she got
in the way of the play a couple of times which could have been
avoided with better positioning but otherwise excellent.

This is coming from a Scotsman so not entirely neutral/balanced
but I think you’re being a bit harsh on the Italians with the
dark arts etc comments. England were overwhelming favourites so
when Italy went ahead of course they would do all they could to
hold on.
As for the referee, I didn’t watch the whole game but from what
I did see she did well. Good decision making throughout,
sufficient injury time added on, and most importantly the
penalty was correct IMO.

The referee did well and had the bravery to make a big call,
that would be controversial simply because of when it happened
and of the significance on the outcome of the game. But, it was
the right decision.
My only complaint relates to the time that elapses from a goal
being scored before play restarts. To be clear, this is not a
complaint about this referee; but a general "moan" that was
highlighted by last night's game.
The goal celebration now seems to include every member of the
20+ playing squad, plus coaching staff and any other hangers on.
What happened to the matter of entering the field of play
without the permission of the referee?? As a result, it takes
about two minutes from the ball entering the goal to play
restarting. All teams are guilty and all teams seem to need to
involve everyone (is this another form of pseudo team bonding).
Either way, it is a nonsense that needs to be eliminated and -
as David Lloyd would often say in another sport - they should
get on with the game!

They've been doing it all tournament though, wasn't just this
game. Not a criticism, it is just how they are coached in
Italy, and almost all of that squad play in Italy so it would be
the expected norm.
I thought she did well. She was very, very quick to clamp down
on any dissent, she was effectively telling them to shut up
before they'd even got a word out, and it seemed to work as the
players stopped, even the complaints after the penalty were
fairly muted.
As for the penalty, yes it is technically a foul and therefore
can't be wrong. But I don't think that is being given in most
games, certainly not in England where the advice at senior
levels is the holding needs to be impactful. Unless she has a
leap far superior to any other footballer there is no way on
earth Beth Mead was getting anywhere near that cross.
