By my reckoning, that now leaves just a few Category 1 officials
to not have had a game so far - John Beaton, Kevin Clancy, Calum
Scott, Colin Steven, Steven Kirkland and Colin Whyte. The first
three are all out together in a Champions League qualifier next
Wednesday and Clancy was also VAR for a qualifier last week so
I’d say it’s probably safe to assume they’re all still Category
1. Colin Steven was due to have a game in the opening round of
fixtures before being replaced late on, so may just be
injured/unavailable.
The latter two are more unknown. Obviously all Scottish
officials are part time so it may just be a case of not being
able to fit availability around work/holidays. Friendly
appointments are also also not widely published so they may have
just had no competitive games yet, but have been involved in
friendlies.

There’s a few pleasant surprises this week. Usually League Cup
last 16 games all go to the FIFA officials and experienced
non-FIFA category 1s (Clancy, McLean etc). Good to see Lloyd
Wilson and Dan McFarlane get the TV games though, albeit they
should be straightforward home victories. Decent
all-Championship tie for Ryan Lee as well.
This variety has allowed Beaton, Walsh and Robertson all to get
a weekend off being in the middle, after doing games the opening
two weekends of the league season, along with European
appointments on top of this.

If a Premiership team is at home and the game is on TV then the
game must have VAR (so the Celtic and Rangers games in this
round). If any other game has a Premiership team at home then
both teams can agree to pay for VAR to be used. This is
extremely rare though - since VAR was introduced north of the
border in 2022 the Livingston v Hibs tie this weekend is the
first instance of clubs choosing to make use of it.
The same rules are in place for Scottish Cup ties as well, and
for semi finals and finals of both competitions at Hampden VAR
is in place.

Colin Whyte and Steven Kirkland dropped out of Category 1 at the
end of last season. I believe there were 5 lost in total.

In a departure from the practice of previous years the SFA has
already uploaded the Handbook for the current season onto its
web-site. This indicates that Steven Kirkland has become an
observer, Messrs Gamble and Whyte have been reclassified to
category 3, while Alex(?) Shepherd has disappeared altogether.

I’ve just come across this booklet today and was about to post
here about it. I’d paste a link but not sure how it would turn
out given it’s a 200+ page PDF. If anybody is suitably
interested though, then searching for “SFA handbook 2025/26”
should bring it up, with refereeing a subsection of the booklet.
