Courtney did both Mexico 86 and Italia 90
Hackett did the Euros in between. In those days you only did 1
game (I think he refereed the opener?)

He did. Hackett’s linesmen were Neil Midgley and Brian Hill.

I believe you may have the wrong game for Frank Coultas.
Newcastle Utd did not play Blackburn Rovers in April 1959

Both vastly superior

I think George Courtney was very unfortunate not to referee at
the 1982 World Cup Finals thus making him part of a very select
band officiating at three World Cup Finals. England's
representative in 1982 was Clive White...and we know how all
that unhappily worked out.

I remember as a teen getting up an watching Courtney do the
3rd/4th place play off in Mexico
He then refereed Italy in the KO stages in 1990 but fell foul to
the QF rule at the time and the English teams success sent him
home

Correct, well spotted. I have relied on other RTR contributors
for some of these early referees, but that is not an excuse.
I'll take Frank out pending further clarification. Newcastle v
Bolton or Birmingham perhaps, both of which did take place in
April 1959.

One of the very best
(Our FIFA list around that time was Courtney, Hackett, Midgeley,
Worrall. Gunn, Lewis R and Hill)
I can’t fathom how Hackett made FIFA… the others on the list are
a different matter…
Quite easily fathomable. His rise was exceedingly rapid. The
powers that be liked him and promoted ( some, I included, would
say over-promoted ) him. I believe ( someone correct me if I'm
wrong ) that he was preferred over George Courtney to officiate
at some international tournament. Not English refereeing's
finest hour.

And then Hackett got the job of running ruining the PGMOL later
on.
