I saw Neil Midgley’s final game at West Ham.
Thought he was a very good referee

       One of the very best
(Our FIFA list around that time was Courtney, Hackett, Midgeley,
Worrall. Gunn, Lewis R and Hill)

What a line up of top talent with one, possibly one and half,
       exceptions.

       > Thank you for pointing these two out. With all the comings and
goings, it is easy to overlook somebody who has not been around
for a while but then returns to active refereeing. I will take
Marsden and Wright off the database. Incidentally, I was at the
Crewe v Grimsby game in April 2025 which Paul Marsden refereed,
       and I was not impressed.

When does he ever have a good game?
       [/quote]
That's a bit harsh. I have seen Paul Marsden referee on a number
of occasions. He is a good referee.

I can’t fathom how Hackett made FIFA… the others on the list are
       a different matter…

Keith Hackett certainly one. The half is Ray Lewis. On his
day a fantastic referee but prone to be trifle inconsistent.
George Courtney, Neil Midgley, Brian Hill and Allan Gunn all
exceptionally fine referees. Joe Worrall, peerless

Quite easily fathomable. His rise was exceedingly rapid. The
powers that be liked him and promoted ( some, I included, would
       say over-promoted ) him. I believe ( someone correct me if I'm
wrong ) that he was preferred over George Courtney to officiate
at some international tournament. Not English refereeing's
       finest hour.

All those referees received the honour of refereeing the FA Cup
Final apart from Ray Lewis. I think he was extraordinarily
unlucky to miss out but there was so much top talent in those
days. Lewis did of course referee one of the most dramatic and
notorious matches in the history of the competition, the Semi
       Final at Hillsborough in 1989

Quite how Roger Milford and Keren Barratt were preferred for the
Final over Ray Lewis is just one of those great mysteries which
I suspect had something to do with 'face-fitting'.
