Over seven years ago, I watched a match at Collne, refereed by
Kristian Silcock. Though based by then in Huyton, he was
well-spoken in the gentler tones of Derbyshire, his origins
later confirmed by ajb. He had a very good game and it was no
surprise when he was subsequently listed for promotion to Level
2B, if the B level was in place at the time. Around the time of
COVID, however, he seemed to disappear.
During recent searches on Google, not for him specifically, the
same name appeared in a recent-looking list, of a Grade 2 Rugby
League referee from St Helens. A cursory check shows that this
is probably the same man, whose LinkedIn profile includes RL
Referee and FA Observer. Do we know when and why this switch of
codes occurred? It is not unknown for rugby referees to switch
codes - Karl Kirkpatrick comes to mind. - but to a completely
different sport seems more unusual for someone already
established at a good level.
Coincidentally, in my musings on that match at Colne I mentioned
that he was built like a rugby player - not quite tall enough
for a lock, perhaps a flanker (with no suggestion of rhyming
slang here.)

Pretty sure this occurred between the end of the 2021/2022
season and the start of the 2022/2023 reason, sadly can't
provide any context as to why though

Yep, it's the same guy. He was demoted from 2b, and I think he
just fell out of love with it. He was always a rugby fan, so
wasn't a surprise when he went into that

It’d actually be interesting to know how the promotion system
works in other sports, as the many Byzantine FA systems I
experienced over the years almost always had no rhyme or reason

The Rugby League had not posted details of National Conference
appointments, so I had no idea who would be in charge of my
nearest match. Reaching the ground, I saw that here was another
referee built like a flanker. When he greeted this old guy in
friendly fashion, I asked his name, and by an amazing
coincidence it was ..
Kristian Silcock! Life never fails to surprise.
