Club World Cup

What do people think of the tournament & refereeing so far, if
you’ve seen any of it. I’ve only seen 3 games. Could do without
the Americanisms, eg. players introduced one at a time!
Refereeing-wise, Faghani in opening game seemed to do well.
Somehow not quite the same referee who was IMO robbed of the
WC18 final - can’t quite decide why - but obviously well thought
of to be given the opening game.
Martinez (HON) in Palmeiras (BRA) v FC Porto (POR) looked
excellent. Great fitness and alertness and right to issue two
clear YCs very early on and then had full control throughout.
Ramos (MEX) had a very poor game in Boca Juniors (ARG) - SL
Benfica (POR). Lots of issues which led to a loss of control.
Did well to let the game breathe at the beginning, but it was
obvious that this needed to be reigned in much earlier but Ramos
failed to adapt. Let far too much go and then the cards flowed
in final 30 mins. Boca, as standard, started many of the dark
arts - feigning, time wasting, unsporting behaviour, mobbing ref
- but Ramos had no authority and no action taken. Repeated
dissent repeatedly ignored. Good RC decision for obvious SFP but
gave the impression a number of issues were because he’d los
control/authority.
Let’s hope all goes well for Taylor and Oliver.

As a separate point, with all the endless Law changes, there has
to be some action around the process of OFRs. Lots of issues
need ironing out:
- players jogging over to chirp at ref all the way to screen;
clearly now coached to do it.
- ARs / 4Off practically having to wrestle players / subs /
coaches away from the area to allow ref to actually do the OR,
often taking eyes off the actual 22 players.
- the ref being jostled / surrounded before he can actually give
the final decision.
Not sure of the answer, but a solution (other than a meaningless
fine) needs to be found, as some of the OFRs are getting
ridiculous.

I have also noticed the additional pressure being placed on
referees in these OFR situations. For all the ridiculous
'americanisms' being employed at this tournament, I do wonder
whether FIFA have missed a trick not employing the MLS approach
to the referee review area, and removing it from between the
technical areas and placing it behind goals/on the opposite side
of the pitch. It may not be the cleanest approach, but would
certainly eliminate the need to forcefully remove a number of
people from the vicinity.
The issue of chirping players on the jog over to the screen is a
slightly more complex fix, as FIFA will no doubt not want to
avoid seeing players cautioned unnecessarily (in their opinion)
to curb this behaviour. That being said, surely even blind
freddy can see what a poor image it is for their newest show
piece event, so we may see some action being taken on this
behaviour from the second round of group games onwards.

Not impressed with Mr Abatti and his team in the City game. In
particular he seemed to be allowing American Football rules at
corners - even more so than in Premier League games. He was
regularly positioned obstructing passing routes.
Contrasting two incidents, Mailula straight legged studs showing
head on into Marmoush’s thigh about 2 foot over the ball,
nowhere near playing the ball - yellow: Lewis slides in clears
the ball, Obeng slides in from the side, late colliding with
Lewis forcing Lewis’s leg up to catch a glancing blow to Obeng’s
face about 18 inches from ground (no visible damage) -Red.

The amount of interrupted & suspended games in this competition
is insane. I don’t see MLS games interrupted unless I miss them.
I am also VERY concerned about how the World Cup will turn out
if this competition is being affected like this…
They wouldn’t be able to play on a rainy night in Stoke…

I’ve not watched a nano second of this tournament. I always use
the summer months to get out, enjoy the sun, the cricket
especially, and have a breather from the footie for a few months
until the new season starts.
This is frankly a summer time money grabbing, poorly thought out
comedy show which has done FIFA no ounce of credibility by
holding it in one of the hottest countries at this time of year.
It’s a farce.

I totally agree, unfortunately, "we" (europe) are in the
minority, it would appear that other continents are making good
money out of this, and of course the selected few make more than
the rivals.
I was hoping a European Super League would get rid of our so
called big six and we could have a better, more competitive
premier league/pyramid, maybe it will be replaced by a "World
Super League".

I fear the Tournament allows the rich clubs to get richer and
further destroys the balance between Premiership clubs. How can
Wolves compete with Chelsea? There is part of me that wishes
FIFA loses their battle over player welfare but what is the
saying, beware of what you wish for? The Premiership will no
longer be the premier club league in England. I prefer the
Championship but that too is screwed i.e. distorted, with
parachute payments.
Sorry, I am rambling.

Is their a reason as to why VAR appointments come a day or two
later than the on-field appointments? This may already be a well
known thing but I have only just noticed.

Anthony Taylor had an eventful game in the Bayern PSG quarter
final.
It was classic Taylor. Unafraid to dish cards out and make
strong decisive decisions.
He is a very black and white referee I think which may have got
him into trouble here.
The first red card challenge was an orange challenge at worst.
And in a game played in a decent spirit he could have gone
yellow and I don’t think anyone would have complained.
Exactly the same as above on the second red card which was
probably a reckless arm rather than a violent elbow.
These two decisions probably whipped the match into a frenzy in
a manner that was perhaps unnecessary.
And sadly then Taylor was forced to overturn a last minute
penalty decision for a challenge on Muller.
I’m more of a fan of Michael Oliver who seems a bit more
diplomatic who probably would have guided this match home in a
less frenetic way.
