hi,
another eminently entertaining snapshot of an enjoyable
afternoon described, as usual, with such clarity, that you can
easily visualise the scene, and almost hear the flat-capped
handlers whistling to their straying whippets from here.
it is noticeable, in a deviation to the customary reporting
practice, no mention has been made regarding the journey home -
i do hope everything went smoothly.
finally, i wonder if i could be bold and suggest, in future
editions, could some mention be made regarding the availability
of refreshments, and their prices? and indeed, if sampled, their
value for money?
keep up the great work [emoji4]

The image you have received is far from accurate. Not a flat cap
to be seen. I am not versed in the differences between whippets
and greyhounds, but the one creature of that general appearance
spent the entire afternoon dozing motionless on its side in the
sunshine. The one stray was a very young toddler, who, seeing
the men enjoying themselves running around on that nice flat
piece of grass, decided several times that he would join them.
No dog whistles and shouts were ignored, so a young lady had to
duck under the rails and pick him up bodily each time. There was
something to be said for the reins that I and others wore when
young.
The return journey could have been better. The bus service runs
quarter hourly in theory at that time, but the road works meant
that the schedule was all to pot. The 16.04, if that is what it
nominally was, did not come until 16.19. On arriving at Dewsbury
bus station (still undergoing "improvement") it pulled up behind
another bus, waited a while, drove round the corner to a
different stand, stopped briefly and finally set off ... only
to leave the station and do a lap of honour before returning and
pulling up behind the same stationary bus. After a few minutes,
this bus departed, revealing that it was on the same route as
ours. A further wait followed before we reversed the diverted
route. There was a short wait at Huddersfield bus station, short
,that is, until the dreaded CANCELLED appeared, with the next
one not due for a further 34 minutes. JCFC therefore nipped -
not the most accurate description - to the nearby Sainsbury's,
saving a visit when Brighouse was reached, so it was not all
bad.
On the outward journey I had passed the time with a large hot
beef and onion sandwich (£4.50), which was tasty, though the
gravy made it very messy to eat. There was no room left to
explore the refreshment offer at Shaw Cross. This was likely to
be my last Rugby League visit of the season, as football returns
on Saturday, but the referee appointments for the NCEFL next
Saturday are depressing,so I might conceivably settle for
another week of rugby. We shall see.

I decided to look at Saturday’s NCEFL appointments in the hopes
that they would depress me like they depressed JCFC. Then I
could justify the need to cheer myself up with a generous glug
of the Scotch I am no longer supposed to enjoy owing to the
recent onset of gout!
It took me a while to find them as my usual source of Step 4-6
appointments, the FA Full Time site, does not appear to
recognise that league. Eventually I tracked them down partly
hidden on the league’s own website.
Perusal failed to depress me, however, since, unlike JCFC, I was
not familiar with the worthy gentlemen listed. I did, though,
recognise Skander Gadaleta from one of the master’s musings.
Since that name is guaranteed to raise one’s spirits without the
need of alcoholic assistance, my exercise in delusional
self-justification had failed.
Oh well . . . but I did allow myself that snifter anyway as a
deserved reward for the considerable effort expended in finding
the appointments!

Perhaps a further quoting tutorial from gooner is required! ;) I
am no expert.
The officials, as you finally discovered, are on the very good
NCEFL website, though one has to move to the right along the top
row of options. The list this time was depressing as the referee
appointed for my match of choice was the one I most assiduously
avoid. I saw him once and found him annoyingly weak, but
accepted that he deserved another chance, but some time later
Mutn3 noted the same approach that had irritated me. The other
reachable games went to familiar old hands, with one exception
who is due to take the FF Cup match planned in a fortnight.
There were a few unknowns, but in faraway places. Brigg,
anybody? So RL at Mirfield was on the cards, but the UCL has
offered the option of a Geography teacher from Leicester in
charge, so, trains permitting, that is my probable destination,
despite the £24plus fare.
Despite my Scottish ancestry, I must admit that I am not
particularly fond of whisky; I prefer Armagnac - or a mug of
tea!

Yes I thought I’d nailed the quoting process with gooner’s
friendly assistance, but true to form I loused up again. Not
sure why as I thought I had done what I was told. Oh well . . .
Btw, I shall be making my debut in Pyramid Patrol later - if I
don’t louse that up as well!

Having said that, I see there is no heading yet for Pyramid
Patrol 2026/27, so I shall have to wait until you or somebody
else creates one. I’m not going to try and create one myself -
it wouldn’t work!

Oh I could have created a new topic - I’m almost an expert at
that now. But I thought Pyramid Patrol had to have a nice
salmon-pink background. That would be beyond me - especially
after my hit-and-miss experience with the blue background of
quotations!
