Bobby Madley hits the headlines

Just seen on Sky sports that the back pages of the papers are
carrying an article with comments from Madley regarding VAR and
some opinions.
Haven’t seen any of it and what it says but certainly worth a
look in the morning when all is printed in black and white.

There is nothing new here. I was at an event where Bobby Madley
was the guest speaker earlier this year and he said the same
things then. For what it is worth, he is a brilliant speaker;
much the best performance I have seen by a referee on these
types of occasions (and I have seen many). He is open, honest,
funny and engaging. He went up a very long way in my estimation
after that evening.

Interesting, I had heard that Bobby was the more extrovert of
the two brothers but that Andy is certainly not bereft of a
sense of humour either.

If Madley had not botched up his career with a nasty tweet I
wonder if he would still be as opposed to VAR and as outspoken.

He didn’t send a nasty tweet. He sent a 5 second video to a
friend that was ill thought and stupid, that friend then
forwarded it to the PGMOL. Something done in private and
betrayed by a so called friend. We’ve all done something stupid
with our friends, anyone who claims otherwise either has no
friends or is a liar and those stupid things we did could have
been offensive or upsetting to someone else. The majority of us
are afforded privacy when we do something stupid which we later
regret and don’t end up splashed across the papers for doing so.

I entirely agree with everything bmb has written. When young and
progressing in my career, on one occasion I made a complete and
inexcusable ass of myself (lack of sobriety had something to do
with it) in front of a very senior member of my profession. He
could quite easily have brought my career to a close but
instead, the next day he tore me off a strip and then told me I
was too good to throw everything away by attempting to be a
Smart Alec, especially when drink had affected my good
judgement. I have never forgotten that decent and kindly man's
words and hope I have re-payed the faith he showed in me.
Bobby Madley's style of officiating has never appealed to me, he
always seems to make himself too much the centre of attention
for my liking. However, his promotion was rapid, SG1 and FIFA.
Now he has returned he appears stuck at SG2 level. Is his
refereeing not what it was or do you think there is a deliberate
policy to keep him away from the spotlight of the most high
profile officiating ?

Well said. We live in a ridiculous culture now where one
ill-advised comment taken the wrong way can end a good man's
career. whatever happened to a quiet word in the ear? I always
try and treat the staff I work with like that
