Sorry to hear of Gilbert's passing. His book, Football League
and Premiership Referees 1888 to 2005, is a bible for many
discerning refereeing historians including myself. I was taking
a look at the introduction to his book. Already an author of
books on Tranmere Rovers, Gilbert decided to plug a gap in stats
on referees with his 2005 book, using mainly Football League
Handbooks as a source + other football data and historians, and
there are many who have cause to be grateful that he took the
time and trouble to plug this gap. RIP Gilbert, your name will
live on.

Writing a couple of books way back when, and pretending i was an
author, the most valuable reference I had was Gilbert's on FL
referees.
How could a list be so enthralling? Anyone who has read it will
know what I mean.
Thanks Gilbert' for your work. RIP
