Andrew Kitchen - League One Play Off - Leyton Orient v Charlton
DIR By: UmpireIan49

First time I’ve seen Andrew Kitchen in action and I was
impressed from what I saw.
Not the best game, a lot of nerves, but Kitchen was right on top
of the game throughout, never let it out of his control and I
can see why he has been given a couple of Premier League trial
games. Has a calm and unruffled demeanour and he handled the
match well in front of a 76,000 crowd.
There was a lengthy delay in the second half as the
communication between him and VAR broke down so he had to
disappear off to get a replacement headset. The crowd took the
delay in good heart (not Kitchen’s fault at all) and there was
11 added minutes as a result.
These play off finals go to those referees at the top of the
pecking order so well done to Andrew Kitchen and I hope to see
him feature more regularly in the Premier League next season. I
know the Burnley correspondents will be ever so slightly
disappointed to see him but I speak as I find. It seems as
though the refereeing performance followed on the excellent one
from Chris Kavanagh yesterday.
More disappointment for my team Leyton Orient, but they can have
no complaints - they didn’t play well enough on the day.

Kitchen looks like one of those manufactured referees but he is
very good imho. It will be interesting to see how he pushes on
at higher levels which I am sure he is destined for.

I was at the game this afternoon. Overall he had good control
on the game and got most things right. I thought he missed a
caution early on in the game for reckless challenge by a
Charlton player on Dan Agyei. I thought he should have added on
more time at the end of first half as there seemed to be more
than 2 mins of stoppages. I thought he could have done more to
speed the game up as Charlton were taking an age on throw ins,
goal keeper goal kicks etc.
There were two balls on the pitch at one point the second half
for about 2 mins, I was surprised none of the other officials
alerted the referee about it.
No criticism of Mr Kitchen but when he got a new head set there
was no communication of what was going on. Just think the
authorities need to improve on their in game communication with
the crowd.
Overall Mr Kitchen did a decent job. Best of luck to Charlton
in the Championship. To not concede a goal across the play off
games is a great achievement as well.

I too was at Wembley today. I thought Andrew Kitchen put in a
very solid performance. It wasn't a classic match, too many
nerves, too high stakes but he delivered the match well. I
didn't see much 'wow' factor about him but perhaps the nature of
the match didn't give that opportunity. His tolerance level for
foul play was quite high but he was even with both teams.
I really do think the stadium announcer should have explained
what happened with the Comms set in the second half. Everybody
was hanging about in a sort of limbo.
Very good for the flow of the game that there wasn't a single
VAR check.
The match could have gone either way but it was a superb free
kick, quite correctly awarded, which proved to be the match
winner.

Not the officials' fault, but they really need to do something
about the comms equipment failures. It is happening far too
often and when it does it causes a very lengthy delay, makes me
wonder if it is something as simple as batteries not being
charged enough.

I think it's something to do with the connection with Stockley
Park. Certainly battery levels for the equipment linking the on
field officials are tested before each match.

I too was fortuitous enough to have the chance to visit Wembley
Stadium today as my Charlton supporting mate offered me a
ticket.
I would agree with others that Andrew Kitchen had a very good
game. As he always does, he lets the game breathe and have a
really nice flow by letting a higher bar of contact go and not
blowing up for the small things. His foul detection was
generally very good and almost a clean sheet for the cards (1
yellow for Jones in added time for delaying the restart).
Personally, I felt the two free kicks given on roughly the edge
of the box near the Leyton Orient fans (one where the goal was
scored and another for a reckless challenge by Charlton no17
Gilbert) should have both been yellow cards. Maybe one early
doors on Agyei too but he let that go as well. I think it’s the
sign of a great performance when all we are talking about is
possible yellow cards.
Many Charlton fans around me were confused over the long
stoppage and as others have mentioned the fans really need to
know what’s going on in times like that.
Very high stakes match and Kitchen and team delivered it calmly,
confidently and competently. Well done.

Can’t wait to see Kitchen refereeing the East Anglian Derby next
season - even if he does get promoted I am quite sure he will
get it.

Orient fan here also at the game. Thought he and the refereeing
team were excellent - well done. Also well done to Charlton, the
best of luck to you for next season.
