It's probably all been said, a mistake by Thomas, yes, but only
for blowing too early. For what it is worth, I think he got the
decision right and I certainly don't think VAR would have
intervened to have the decision overturned.

If there was no VAR there would be no controversy here
       whatsoever

Someone in the appointments thread said it was a good call to
make Bobby Madley 4th official instead of Anthony Backhouse.
Definetpy think Backhouse got away with one after that game as
he would have been getting loads of grief from the spanish
       dracula

A marginal call, an understandable error which apparently
appears to have had more impact on the game than a red card
conceded by Villa? This is absolute tosh, that Villa feel
cheated when they themselves were responsible for their own
defeat. Look at home first before blaming others. I am pleased
Villa have missed out, their attitude stinks. Rugby, currently,
has a better approach. Accept the decision gratefully, move on
       and complain behind the scenes.

Of course a referee can only gain experience at a certain level
by refereeing at that level. However I confess to a bit of
surprise that such a crucial match, on which a possible
Champions League place was at stake, was given to a referee who
has had relatively little experience in the Premiership (
compared to many other officials ). One wonders why PGMOL have
not entrusted more high profile matches to him during the
season. That said, I think Thomas Bramall is a fine referee.
The comments of Unai Emery, as reported in today's Times, seem
to be a model of restraint and moderation in the face of huge
disappointment and he should be commended for that.

There is obviously a market opportunity here for a VAR whistle
which delays any sound emerging for about 3 seconds after the
       referee blows it.

I don't think Mr Bramall will be invited to a Buckingham Palace
garden party any time soon [emoji6]

May be a rogue shout, but the way Pau Torres went up to Tom
Bramall for one of those major decisions (RC/Foul) was
unacceptable. I think Tom could have sent him off. Went up to
him and batted his arm (softly) down and went screaming in his
       face.
We saw it with Mitrovic a few seasons ago, bashing Kav’s
shoulder. Obviously this is less serious but I think if he was
to be sent off it would not be rescinded at all.
I get he was booked but you should not make contact with a match
       official like that.

Anthony Taylor must already have one and been trialing it for a
       season or so.
