Curiouser and curiouser, my opinions of the management of the
Premier League would just about allow me to believe that they
don't understand the role of the PGMOL. So let's take a look at
       the PGMOL appointments policy

       Highlighting a couple of points.

       > Scope
       > This policy, which was approved by the PGMOL Board on 9th
August 2024, outlines, in respect of matches in
       > the competitions detailed below: (a) the criteria by which the
eligibility of match officials will be determined; and
       > (b) the process by which match officials will be appointed to
       officiate in such matches.
       > Premier League
       > EFL Championship
       > EFL 1
       > EFL 2
       > EFL Cup
       > EFL Trophy
       > FA Cup (1st Round Proper onwards)
       > National League Premier
       > Premier League 2 (Div 1+Div 2)
       > Premier League Cup
       > Premier League International Cup
       > National League Cup
       > Women’s Super League
       > Women’s Championship
       > Women’s FA Cup (4th Round Proper onwards)
       --- End Quote ---
OK so this policy applies to all FA Cup matches onward from the
1st round proper. Therefore the Cup Final, and that it is the
same policy across all the other competitions including the
       Premier League, for example.
       From the same document

       > 2 of 2

       > Appointments
       > Having assessed eligibility for appointment in accordance with
the criteria set out above, the appointment of
       > the officiating team for each match will be made by each
group’s respective management team at their

       > All appointments are subject to oversight from the PGMOL Chief

       > In exercising their discretion the management teams and the

       > account a range of practical, operational and performance
       considerations.
       --- End Quote ---
So the PGMOL don't seem to know that there is a fundamental
difference between FA Cup games and Premier League Games and
moreover there is a specific statement -
"All appointments are subject to oversight from the PGMOL Chief
Refereeing Officer, who may vary any
       appointment at his/her discretion."
Which would seem to me to indicate that Mr Webb must retain
responsibility for the performance of referees even in the cup
       final.

The PGMOL employs the officials and has jurisdiction over them,
therefore, the head of that organisation has to accept
responsibility for what the employees do, whether they be right
or wrong. Certainly not simple as far as football is concerned
and made even more complicated because of VAR.
In the past, officials did their job, matches were assessed and
things sorted from that, however, we now have VAR involved and
things revolve around that and highlight what may or may not be
contraversial according to whose opinion you listen to ----and
every one has an opinion and want to be heard.
We are making a simple game much more complicated both on and
off the pitch and the enjoyment for those fans who attend
matches is being diminished all because those running the game,
or is it the media, want the perfect game of football. It will
never happen, no matter how much technology they introduce,
because there will always be human error involving those playing
       and those officiating.

I wish it was the case that the head of an organisation has to
accept responsibility for their employees actions. We could
apply it to The Post Office, Water Authorites, Hospitals, but we
all know that it is not the case and never will be.
Can’t we just accept that in every walk of life mistakes are
made and apologies follow, sometimes inadequately as more than
an apology is needed.Referees are making on the spot decisions
in far from ideal situations and mistakes will happen, the aim
should be minimising mistakes not eliminating them, otherwise
ex-referees and journalists would be hard put to find things to
pontificate on and fans would have no one to blame other than
       their team.
I think every one on this website will have made a mistake, and
probably realised it instantly, I know I did, and more than
once, but admit if and get on with life.
End of Season rant finished !

A very good point made here. When I was young I had a tendency
to beat myself up a bit when I got things wrong. One day a very
wise colleague offered me the old adage " the man who never made
a mistake, never made anything " but somehow his words have
stuck with me ever since. There is a lamentable view nowadays,
probably spawned by years of people in authority evading
responsibility, which maintains that whenever things go wrong
there is always blame to be attached. Sometimes there is and
sometimes there isn't. Of course, in any walk of life, the
quickest and sharpest blame is often doled out to those in
senior positions by people who have not achieved such seniority,
especially if they felt they should have done. " How s/he got to
where they have, I do not know ", if I had a hundred pounds for
every time I have heard or read that, or something similar, I
       would be exceedingly rich now.
