Top performing referees of the 24/25 season

As the domestic football season comes to a close, it’s time to
reflect on who have been some of the top performing officials up
and down the leagues.
I think the premier league is very difficult to choose a top
performing referee. Many referees have had good spells but have
also had a poor run of form as well - Barrott, Bankes and
Attwell come to mind. In terms of consistency I’d have to put
Anthony Taylor and Chris Kavanagh up there who have had very
solid seasons. I think Tony Harrington has had a good season
also. Andy Madley and Tim Robinson have been some of the poorer
SG1 officials in my opinion this year. However I know they’re
capable of much better than what they’ve shown this year and
hope they bounce back.
For me, David Webb has been the best championship official.
Always calm and collected and never flustered by a big occasion.
Kitchen has done well too picking up some big games, however
some feedback has not always been positive. I always think of
him as a good reliable official and has been good when I’ve seen
him this year. Josh Smith is as always very good however he
seems to have had another or perhaps recurring injury thats been
keeping him out. John Busby and Oliver Langford perhaps going
under the radar with some of the appointments they’ve had. I
think most RTR contributors would agree that Sam Allison has not
had the best year this year.
Looking at the rising stars from lower down the leagues, I’d say
Lewis Smith, Ruebyn Ricardo, Farai Hallam, Will Finnie, and Ben
Toner are the ones who could expect very good appointments next
season and some perhaps an alignment to SG2. Personally I like
the look of Tom Kirk and Elliot Bell who have been good this
year too. I couldn’t put them in an order of who’s been the best
because I don’t watch lots of L1 and L2 but they are the names I
would pick out. Scott Oldham and Martin Coy seem to be two safe
pairs of hands when needed.

My SG1 and SG2 promotion predictions:
David Webb
Andrew Kitchen
More unlikely prediction: Josh Smith (Injuries)
To replace Graham Scott & Paul Tierney, on-field at least
SG2:
Ruebyn Ricardo
Ben Toner
More unlikely prediction: Farai Hallam, Lewis Smith
For the SG2 predictions, I think it could he any combination.
Toner seems to have the most championship experience, correct if
wrong

The best performing referee in sg1 for me has to be Chris
kavanagh.
Of all the referees I have seen in sg2 there is one referee who
produced the best performance I’ve seen this season and also the
worst performance of the season that was Gavin Ward abysmal QPR
v ARGYLE and absolutely outstanding ARGYLE vs NORWICH. One
referee seen twice Tim Robinson who was very good both times but
he is sg1 so maybe cannot count him , so I will say the safest
pair of hands for me is David Webb. Cannot comment on the
national list .

I’ll give a top 3 from each group (in no order)
SG1: Kav, Taylor, Brooks
SG2: Webb, Kitchen, J Smith
L1 and 2: Herczeg, Kirk, Hallam
I expect Webb and Kitchen to be promoted as their appointments
suggest they are clear of the rest, and Herczeg to SG2 looks
very likely to me aswell.
I also really like Elliot Bell. And think Jamie O’Connor could
progress nicely with some good matches next season. Of the older
heads, Ross Joyce, Tom Reeves and Breakspear are always
reliable. I’m still yet to be convinced by Toner, L Smith or
Speedie
Special mention to mini Kettle who has started off well

SG1 Mr Taylor on days when the game suits it and he judges his
relaxed style correctly Brentford v Man City being an example,
has been good. He's generally managed the more feisty games well
too. Not seen enough of the others to go beyond generally fine.
SG2 Only seen Messrs Davies and Simpson, the first was sound and
the second wasn't.
FL Only seen once, but of the names being put forward, Ben Toner
was poor in TRFC v Grimsby including failing to award a clear
penalty for the home team, where the club had subsequent
feedback this was an error. Puzzled Tom Kirk is getting so many
good fixtures on his showing at Barrow v TRFC and Mr Herczeg
tolerated levels of man-handling better suited to a rugby match
in TRFC v Fleetwood. I was impressed by Ross Joyce, who appears
to have modified his approach with positive benefit.
While only his first season on the FL list, watched Michael
Barlow having a couple of steady games and he seems to be very
calm, the most promising of the newcomers I've seen.

My favourite SG1 referee's this season in order have been:
1) Kavanagh
2) Taylor
3) Pawson
4) Attwell
The referee's in SG1 that I have been disappointed with this
season are Oliver, Madley, Hooper and perhaps controversially on
this list for me is Brooks. I can't quite put my finger on why I
haven't enjoyed watching him this season, but I think he looks
quite rigid and has made a few pretty poor decisions. I hope the
summer break gives him and the others on my list a chance to
reset and start next season strong.
