Cup final appointment's because it is an official's
"turn"

I've been reading the analysis on Stuart Attwell's performance
in the FA Cup Final today with some people questioning how the
appointments to cup final matches are made.
There seems to be a fairly strong opinion that appointments are
made to appease certain match officials with some pointing to
Paul Tierney's appointment to the 2023 FA Cup Final as being
"wrong" as he was on a run of poor form at the time
I am not agreeing or disagreeing with this statement. What I
would like to know is your thoughts on the above statements and
cup final appointment's in general. Are there politics in play?
Should we see the current top referee's repeatedly appointed to
cup finals if others are not up to standard? The recent article
in The Telegraph suggests that PGMOL are considering this
approach to appointments in the PL.
Your thoughts?

For fans the Cup Finals are massive events, even the lower rated
cup finals are still huge for the fans of the teams. They should
be refereed by the best available referee without any
favouritism or regard for connections.
It should also be made clear that red card offences will be
treated as such regardless of when they occur….poor Henderson
has been involved in two such incidents, one as perpetrator and
one as victim. Both referees failed to take the appropriate
action and to my eternal disappointment one was promoted
immediately afterwards.

I think the FA Cup Final should, if the participating teams
allow it, be given to the best performing referee of that
season.
I don’t think I’m speaking out of turn in saying that I don’t
think Attwell has been in even the top three referees this
season.

Unless I’ve completely misread your comment, you’re basically
suggesting National list referees, even SG2 will never get an
opportunity in finals. Surely the current system is better than
Taylor/Oliver getting every wembley game for the past 5-10 years

To be fair, if we had the best performing referee rule, then
this year's final would probably not have gone to either Taylor
or Oliver.
I don't have strong feelings on this subject, I think it's nice
that it's shared around, as it does prevent the same officials
dominating it - but I do think form should be part of the
selection process.

Bear in mind back in the distant days - the appointment was
sometimes given as a “thank you” to a retiring referee

I don't believe the FAC has ever been given to the best
performing referee of that season
Usual factors were FIFA listed, seniority, as stated above
"thank you", other political factors
For many years you could almost predict the referee (often
having been 4th the previous year or two)
Consequently some very good referees, even international ones,
didn't get to do the FAC final before they retired
So if you apply the above criteria then Attwell would have
always been in the running

I agree it referees should only have it once but it should go to
the best performing referee of the season who hasn’t had it
