Having seen a few more replays it is DOGSO clear, and Henderson
got away with it. And people on here rate Gillett as the best
referee in the premier league 😆
Never a penalty for city so balanced itself out, palace were the
better side and deserved the victory

It didn't really, did it? Had the DOGSO been applied then
Henderson wouldn't have been able to save the penalty.

Has an FA cup decision ever been discussed on the Mic’d Up
series?
Or is that purely for PL games?

Agree with your comments except for balancing itself out, losing
a player for about an hour (especially your no 1 goalkeeper) or
conceding a penalty kick. I dont see that as balancing things
up. An incorrect penalty awarded to each side maybe but not
penalty kick over an early sending off of a specialist player
who is far superior to the back up.
Btw i wanted Palace to win and i am very pleased for football
overall they did.

Interesting to see the variety of views on here. I actually
thought Atwell did well. Looked assured and I like that he tried
to keep the game going - several times MC players were trying to
falsely buy soft FKs and he rightly waved it away. YCs were all
spot on and he let the right things go early on.
Penalty - looked definitely a call from AR1 hence the delay.
Once given, I think there was room for the VAR to suggest an
OFR. To me, you could see a touch of the ball and the MC player
was initiating / exaggerating the contact. How obvious … I
suppose that’s the question.
Handball was a very tough one for VAR I think. Despite Rooney’s
ridiculous rantings in the studio (how can a manager be so
ignorant of the laws …?) it was tricky. Also doesn’t help that
there is a myth that every handball by the GK in these scenarios
is a RC. Firstly AR should give it live, but I think it can be
argued that, in poking it round the GK, there would’ve been an
angle which led to a promising (rather than obvious GSO). Had
the ref given a RC onfield, the VAR would’ve supported that too.
That’s what VAR is for - obvious errors, not re refereeing. It’s
a good example where you’d like to have ‘neutral’ OFR, give the
onfield ref a chance to see it again with no implication there’s
been an ‘obvious error.. Also, having ben told there’s no OFR
(but an obvious handball), the guidance needs to change to allow
the ref to give a YC (even if restart doesn’t change) - it’s
just not credible for everyone to know but the GK gets a free
pass.
AR1 also seemed to be a bit trigger happy with quite a few
offside flags contrary to recent delaying - have they maybe been
told to dial back the delays to the really close ones? Attwel
even waited for the pay to finish on a couple. Also then missed
the one to disallow the goal which could see in real time.

The touch that made the "second" goal offside was really
difficult to spot. He will be disappointed not to have seen it,
but a lot of top ARs would have been in the same boat. This is
what VAR does best.

Martin Samuel in the Sunday Times has loaded up on Atwell as if
to justify his earlier reservations. Part of his logic regarding
the DOGSO decision was that Haarland is a top striker and in
effect you should take account of that. He was quite capable of
lifting the ball over the keeper and then hitting the ball on
target on an angle. Presumably if Harry Maguire was in the same
situation, you argue that he was unlikely to have a shot at
goal, therefore that is not DOGSO.
There are several sports writers in the Times who I find
irritate me, none of whom are comparable to Brian Glanville who
has sadly passed away. The Sunday Times has a tribute in the
paper today and I can only lament the decline in journalistic
standards.

Firstly, I was disappointed with the BBC for cutting away from
the match officials when the players and officials were being
presented to the Prince of Wales. It was their "big day" at the
FA Cup final (their only chance) and the BBC should have stayed
with them.
The Henderson handball should have been identified on-field.
The AR may not have been on line (as he was with the second
rearmost defender), but still should have assisted the referee.
Given the fact that ARs are now instructed not to indicate when
a goal-keeper carries the ball out of the penalty area when
releasing it into play, I wonder if that element of the Law has
slipped from the collective awareness?
I also believe that it was not an obvious goal-scoring
opportunity, but a possible / likely one. The attacker was
chasing a through ball and did not have it under control. He
still had a lot to do to score. Henderson still had the right
to challenge / block the ball as a defender (just not as a
goal-keeper). The right outcome should have been a direct free
kick and a yellow card.
For the penalty, the defender may have got a scrape on the ball
but the more significant contact was on the attacker. It was a
careless challenge and the correct sanction applied.
The second goal that was eventually ruled out for offside was a
really tough spot and - until VAR got involved not many people
(including defenders) was calling it as offside. VAR got the
decision right when it was very hard to do live.
All referees want to come away from big games with everyone
talking about the game and not the match officials. For that
reason (and look at the volume of comments on here!) the
refereeing team will be hugely disappointed that their big day
at Wembley has turned out like this.

I entirely agree with everything Leggy has written with such
admirable clarity here. It perfectly describes my position on
all these incidents that I need not make any further comment
except to say that I am delighted Crystal Palace won ( simply
because it's good that a Club which has never won the FA Cup now
has ) and as a reward for the team's tenacity on the day.

I have to ask am I missing something with the penalty? To me
this is the initial contact in which silva has also stepped
across the player to help create.
