Martin Samuel writing in The Times
   DIR By: Whistleblower

I always pay attention to what Martin Samuel writes though I am
not always in agreement with him. In his piece today he is
comparing what constitutes violent play and merits a red card.
In particular he focusses on decisions made by Stuart Attwell
whom, in passing, he refers to as "the Premier League's worst
official". A somewhat harsh judgement I would say. I don't
think Attwell is anywhere near the best but neither would I
single him out as the worst.

Not a fan of Samuel although at times he raises some good
discussion points. SFP and violent conduct is a weakness amongst
the PGMOL referees. All of them appear to have a problem and
singling out one individual is unfair. Freedom of expression
       masquerading as bullying?

I would say that the guidance from above makes it nigh on
impossible for referees to decide what is SFP and what is not.
Since Mr Webb joined the pgmol the waters have got muddier than
they were under previous regimes. The Pgmol is trying to pander
to too many different bodies in the game instead of carrying out
their duty ie referee to the laws of the game.
I am fed up with this term “its what the game wants”
What the game wants is strong referees that are fully backed for
carrying out their duties in a proper manner.

Alleluia! You say what the game wants is strong referees,
however, I would go further to this and say it is what the game
needs, along with the full backing for them to carry out their
duties in a proper manner. Things have been allowed to lapse
for whatever reason and it has not helped the game in my
       opinion.

Samuel is an odd columnist, he also had a section in the main
paper, which I often thought lacked the quality and insight of
other journalists. I remember he wrote a whole article on why
Brighton could not host a game on Boxing Day, which went
nowhere. He is also prone to poor judgments, such as who is a
good or bad referee. Writing this about Attwell is misguided,
especially as he has just been given the FA cup final.

I would say that Mr Attwell has a fair bit of competition for Mr
Samuel’s accolade, many have different strengths and weaknesses
that making a best and worst judgement a difficult one.
Different games suit a different mix of attributes. He does
perhaps have the honour of having made some the strangest
decisions as an on field referee, although I do think he is a
better VAR than many. Perhaps there is a difference between
having to make instant decisions and having a bit more time to
       think things through?

Having read M Martin Samuel’s article after the game I have two
       conflicting thoughts.
Is Martin Samuel a deluded, West Ham supporting, conspiracy
fantasist, or, is he a brave journalist who is prepared to swim
against the tide of media propaganda?
In other words could he possibly be the equivalent of Hans
Christian Anderson’s little boy in the Emperor’s New Clothes?
I was initially amused by his substitution of ‘Gaslighting’ for
the “G’ in PGMOL, but then I looked up just what Gaslighting
       meant, and felt a chill.
I assume Martin Samuel chose this word carefully and it is
alarming that he should think it appropriate. It should however
alert the PGMOL to the thought that their secrecy can clearly
       encourage such thoughts.
