Sam Barrott - Ipswich v Brentford

Firstly, I want to say that Brentford should’ve had two separate
penalties for holding offences which looked like they belonged
more on a rugby field or a wrestling arena.
But I have a question about restarting the play which I hope
someone can clear up for me.
So the corner has been delivered by Mbeumo and in the box
there’s lots of holding going on and Greaves and van den Berg
end up on the floor. Palmer punches the corner away but then Sam
Barrott stops the game right then with the ball in the middle of
the penalty box and points for the corner to be retaken.
Now I’m happy to be corrected but surely you cannot ask for the
corner to be retaken as soon as it’s delivered. If Barrott has
blown his whistle then surely he has to give a defensive foul or
a penalty. For me it’s really confusing and I don’t believe the
corner should’ve been retaken but a penalty should’ve been given
through VAR review anyway.
I think the Premier League needs to take a leaf out of UEFAs
book with sustained holding because what some Ipswich players
did today was disgusting (and I say that being a Town fan
myself). I know what was given today was consistent with similar
incidents throughout the season but come on PGMOL, things like
today are not on. Ridiculous amount of prolonged holding.
I would really like to hear either of the two holding incidents
on the next Mic’d up programme so I can understand what is going
through Barrott’s and Gillett’s mind.

The ball wasn't in play when the foul happened, so no penalty
was possible. Barrott delayed his whistle for a second, most
likely to check with his assistant about the state of the ball
when the foul happened. I understand the confusion, but the
correct decision was reached in the end imo

Difficult afternoon for Barrott, dark arts well and truly on
display this afternoon. Very surprising that Gillet has
recommended an OFR for Tuanzebe on Collins.

He got this decision correct, later in the game there was a var
checking that they called mutual holding when it was more of a
rugby tackle, should have been a Brentford penalty

Ball wasn't in play when the holding occurred, VAR checked it
and validated this. Therefore the only possible outcome can be
a retake.

Ok, I understand that but is this a loophole in the law then
because what we’re now saying is it’s ok to wrestle and hold
before the ball is in play and as long as you aren’t doing it
when the corner is delivered, it’s fine.
For me, it’s still a difficult one to understand. What I don’t
like is how long Barrott waited to blow the whistle. Like I said
in my original post, the ball is punched away by the GK, Palmer
lands in the middle of the box and the whistle goes then. If he
has to communicate with the AR, then why doesn’t he blow the
whistle first and then talk to him.

The pgmol and its officials have serious problems when it comes
to players grappling one another and recognising serious foul
play end of.
There should be no need for any player to hold an opponent on
the field of play.
This wouldnt be a problem if it wax nipped in the bud years ago.
Football is becoming more like rugby every week, except that
referees in that code look after players welfare much more with
strong sanctions ie red cards and long bans for forearm smashes
whereas english football ignores it.

It did feel much worse than in lots of other games; not quite
sure what was in the water at Portman Road
I cannot work out whether the analysis was of the other team
(having to prevent certain people from moving) or on the referee
(he does not award many fks/penalties for this) as there seemed
a concerted effort by both teams to resort to holding/rugby
tackling
"Mutual holding" to me is when both players are holding equally
- if one continues much longer than the other, then surely
that's a foul?
I agree with correspondents above that it is an issue in
football - my concern is flailing arms and hands in trying to
break away will cause further problems
