Just looked at the Sky highlights and the red card is nailed on.
What bemused me is that the cocommentator believed the red card
was "very, very controversial" while he could understand the
penalty! Heat of the moment stuff perhaps, but his ignorance
doesn't help the viewer to judge the referee fairly and so
Langford gets undeserved flack.
Manning's comments come over as disgusting. Clearly designed to
defend the player who gave away the penalty, give the team a
sense of injustice to fire them up at Bramhall Lane, and keep
the supporters onside. Pathetic, so transparent and the
excellent referee gets the blame.

You're right of course ....... and I'm glad you agree he is a
poor referee.

I’m amazed by the reaction, I think it’s an excellent decision
from Langford.
I feel if the penalty incident was up the other end and wasn’t
given I doubt the Bristol manager would be praising the ref….

Edited from poor referee to excellent! Poor as in deserving of
pity or sympathy as defined by Oxford Languages.

I entirely agree with this. I am actually incredulous that
anyone thinks this should not be a red card. Both arms around
the shoulders from a position where the ball simply can't be won
fairly. If we are deeming this to be a challenge for the ball
we will have to start considering all manner of assaults to be
challenges for the ball as long as there is a token wave of the
foot in the general direction of the ball afterwards.

In fairness to Don Goodman, he’s one of the few co-comms that
will praise a referee for a good decision on most occasions -
but on this one, he’s got it wrong.
I didn’t see the game but agree with most that it’s a great
decision by Oli Langford. Good teamwork with the AR for the
disallowed Sheff United goal too.

I think it shows how difficult it is to make a judgement. If you
look hips down you probably give a penalty and yellow card. If
you look hips up you see the primary contact with the arms that
makes it a red.
Kudos to referee for being fully focused to see everything and
getting it right. First time I saw it, I was questioning if it
was a foul but with the benefit of a replay its pretty obvious
it's penalty and Dogso with no attempt to play ball.

For balance, for those that were watching live at half time Troy
Deeney and Jobi McAnuff said that they agreed with the decision.

Thank you for posting that because I always mute the commentary
and pundits and just watch the game and make up my own mind as
to decisions etc., just as you do when attending a match live.
On reading this board, I couldn't understand why there was any
controversy when a rugby tackle stopping an attempt on goal was
also given a red card. It was an easy decision.
