Syzymon Marciniak: Inter Milan v Barcelona

Excellent from Higler on VAR for the penalty review, very
understandable why Marciniak initially went no penalty.
A good 1st half, he'll have to be on his A game in the 2nd as
Barcelona look determined to take a leaf out of Real Madrid's
book and do anything to unsettle the referee.

I feel the overall decision making tonight was not exactly
vintage Marciniak. However his authority was certainly there and
I think all in all it was a good display.
The 2nd OFR was also very understandable I feel.
As I write that, another twist! Looks like we have another 30
minutes ahead of us.

In fairness there’s been some very tight calls, VAR has helped a
lot. His overall game management is incredible though.

Very much agree, I think he’s got a couple of small decisions
wrong but nothing that directly impacted the game.
I must say though I think the Barca manager, Flick is right to
point out to the 4O how much Inzaghi is outside his technical
area. I don’t think the 4O has done a good job regarding that.

Unfortunate timing of the whistle for half time in extra time
there, just as it’s played through the legs and inter are in
behind

What a game so far!
Overall has been very good. Always seems odd to say that when
there have been two VAR interventions, but they were both
extremely marginal calls and the penalty for Inter Milan was
tough to spot in real time. For the Barcelona penalty corrected
to a free kick, Mark Clattenburg on Prime commentary was talking
about the first contact being outside the penalty area and it
then being a question of whether there was further contact
inside the penalty area. Would have thought he would know and
say that is only relevant to holding offences. A ‘mistimed’
tackle will be judged on first point of contact.
Interesting decision to blow for HT in extra time just now - I
think if Inter Milan were not leading all hell would have broken
loose.
AR1 with a couple of poor calls in the second half to flag
offside when there has been no offence by the attacker - ball
cleanly won by the defender with no challenge / attempt to
challenge by the player in an offside position.
Agree with comments about the Inter Milan manager and the
technical area. Constantly outside the confines and even
encroaching on to the field of play (including just now at the
start of the second half of extra time!) The 4th official needs
to be doing more to control it.

If Inter make the final, I think that rather than going with the
2nd best official from the country of the match referee like
they normally do, a strong 4th official should be appointed to
stamp out this issue.
For example, it sounds like Kovacs is dead on for the final,
rather than appointing Petrescu as 4th official, I think they'd
be better going for the likes of a Makkelie, Zwayer who will not
let any nonsense slide.

The best two football games of this decade, both refereed by
this man, and both have seen him have a positive role in them.
Not bad at all.

Barca have seemed to caught Madrid Syndrome with blaming the
referee.
‘UEFA should look into this referee. All the 50/50 decisions
went in Inter’s favour’
Oh dear…

I didn't think that was unfortunate at all. Inter had been
timewasting (sorry, managing the game) since they went 4-3
ahead. I saw no reason for them to benefit from going beyond
the two minutes signalled. Incidentally, it was good to see a
proper allowance for time lost made in extra time in a UEFA
game.
