       A MADLEY - Palace v Forest
   DIR By: TheThingFromLewes

Madley has been all over the shop tonight, very poor.
Missed a clear penalty when Sels cleaned out Mitchell which VAR
had to get involved and sent him very promptly to the screen.
Sangare really should be off for two yellows, his second
challenge wasn’t carded yet Gibbs-White was carded for a similar
       challenge.
Some of the players starting to get frustrated with the poor
decisions, hence the flurry of cards and backchat.
       9 yellows thus far.
There has been some pretty frequent comments on these boards by
some of our well versed correspondents on how good he was last
year, resulting in the FA cup final, and that his performances
have not been up to that standard in recent times.

I haven’t watched most of the game so my thoughts don’t reflect
       the whole game.
As already mentioned, there were a flurry of yellow cards for
SPA. Sangare arguably fortunate to remain on the field. Poor to
miss the penalty incident and was an easy one to overrule by VAR
James Bell. Once again, his pretty poor domestic season has
       sadly continued.

Can’t comment as I tuned in at 89 minutes just before the
       communications issue with the AR.
I am quick to have a go at managers behaviour but I thought
Oliver Glasner behaved with real class, having a smile and joke
with Andy Madley, rather than moaning about the delay - as sadly
       has become more the norm!
I have only seen two interviews with Mr. Glasner concerning
referees, and maybe he gives abuse every week, I don’t watch
each game so I don’t know. But from what I have seen, he seems a
       very classy gentleman indeed.

Yep a very poor season for Madley so the powers that be assign
him to a Championship play off game. I sometimes despair at the
logic of those making these appointments

I only turned game on just as Madley was being called over to
the screen for the VAR penalty review, so can't comment on the
first half. Not giving the penalty without VAR's help is
obviously not great. Sky have just pointed out that the first
more significant trip was actually by a Forest defender who was
already on a booking. The Palace striker was already on his way
down by the time the keeper, who was booked for DOGSO, kicked
him. So both Madley and the VAR have identified the wrong
offence and consequently missed a potential second yellow.
That aside, Madley's performance after that was good.
Sangare's foul wasn't even close to being a yellow card. He was
nutmegged and had nowhere to go. It wasn't reckless and it
didn't stop a promising attack as it was on the halfway line and
Eze hadn't yet begun to get into any sort of pacey attacking run
that you could argue was cynically halted. There were questions
raised by Palace ofcourse, as there always are when a player on
a booking commits a foul, but Madley dealt with it nicely with a
smile and a laugh to the Palace captain who seemed happy enough
       back.
The comparison to Gibbs-White's correct booking is ludicrous.
His was a clear example of stopping a promising attack, deeper
into the Forest half, where the fouled player would otherwise
have been away unchallenged down the wing, with Forest's full
back out of position, at pace nearing the penalty area. Madley
gestured as such at the time.
The idea that the flurry of cards came from frustration at
Madley is also ridiculous. They were all for reckless challenges
and cynical stopping a promising attack and seemed to mainly
come from Forest's frustration that the game wasn't going their
way. There wasn't a single one that was wrong and I'm not sure
what more you'd have wanted Madley to do.
This feels like a very lazy criticism. The large number of
bookings in a game can't always be pinned on a referee and a
player already on a yellow card who commits an innocuous foul
isn't lucky to not be sent off.

Sangare's "foul" was never a second yellow. I'm not sure he knew
what he was doing to foul the opponent. It was a good decision.
The missed penalty is interesting and I can only assume Madley
didn't get a clear view and nor did his assistant. A lot
happened, he couldn't be sure who touched who and who got the
ball. The debrief this am will be interesting.
As for the rest of the game, Madley did OK. By no means poor and
in a game where it was end to end, a Forest team relying on
quick breaks, SPA cards are far more likely.

The missed penalty was complicated but it was a positioning
problem. If you freeze the action at the point of contact, Mr
Madley has his view obscured by two players. No doubt he will
think about whether he could have been in a better position. I
am more concerned by the VAR process. The foul that caused the
Mitchell to go down was by the defender not the goalkeeper. The
wrong player was sanctioned. The conversation between referee
and VAR should have identified that correctly.
