C Pawson - Brighton vs Newcastle United

Difficult second half in particular for Pawson to manage with a
handful of OFRs and checks. Think he’ll be disappointed to have
missed Willock’s simulation in real-time in terms of
positioning, his view is very clearly blocked.
Good shout on PK for the handball - Newcastle eventually getting
the spot kit that was seemingly evading them all afternoon!
Not sure if it’s ever been discussed or picked up on before but
in terms of signalling and rapport, Pawson seemed incredibly
disinterested today. Not sure whether it was the demands of the
game or not, but he didn’t look like he was enjoying it at all.

Pawson is pretty low key in his demeanour on the pitch, his is
the antithesis of flamboyant refereeing and the more he
concentrates then the more straight laced he appears. I believe
him to be a very fine referee.

I agree with whistleblower, Pawson has a style which is rather
offbeat, waiting and thinking before making a decision. He is
indeed a good referee, maybe doesn't sell his decisions like
some but I rate him quite highly. Not the best, maybe best of
       the rest.

Regarding the 2nd penalty given but then cancelled after an OFR
and a YC issued for simulation: as you say his view was very
clearly blocked, so I don't understand how he could award
anything. I can only assume he acted on
input from his AR as I'd have thought Pawson was too good a
       referee to guess.

How is that given that the other 2 decisions were clearly
incorrect in the first place? It wasn't as if they were
decisions that could have been given or not.

On the penalty incidents interventions -
The first was a very tight inside/outside call that I think the
referee can be forgiven for getting wrong in real time.
The second I think Pawson could have gotten a better angle, with
his view at least partially blocked I can see why, perhaps in
the advice of an AR, he gave the penalty. However, a well
positioned referee, as they always should be, would be
disappointed to get it wrong. At least a YC for simulation was
issued though, too often a drop ball is awarded.
The handball penalty is 100% correct, clear on replay but in
real time that happens very quickly - a good call.
Pawson can look visually a tad meek at times. However, I don’t
really believe he is, since we now hear the VAR audio, I think
you’d have to say he is perhaps the most relaxed EPL referee.
His calmness to me seems to work well with players and I’m sure
aids decision making. I do wish on big decisions, such as the
handball penalty, he made a more firm and clear gesture as it
can make him look uncertain. I don’t think he is, as we’ve heard
from the audio - he just doesn’t get too excited!
I think in the main he has had a very good season. He may never
be as good as Taylor or Oliver when they are flying, but I think
he is comfortably in the top 5 most seasons. I started following
refereeing around the time Pawson joined SG1. How the years fly
by, he since joined and left the FIFA list and is now probably
in the final 5-7 years of his career. I hope he’ll continue to
deliver the good performances we have come accustomed to.
