Good Friday - Officials in the Championship

Plenty of incidents around the grounds in the championship with
some referees doing well and others not covering themselves in
glory. I’ll give my thoughts on some of them below.

(Boro v
Plymouth)
Anthony Backhouse - A really important moment at the end of a
crucial match for both teams for different reasons. A late
penalty awarded for DOGSO with no attempt to play the ball so a
red card was shown to Edwards. For me, this is a real 50/50
decision and I think some give it and some don’t. There’s a
clear arm in the back but it’s whether it’s enough to send
Conway sprawling to the floor like he did. The decision is
justifiable imo but I can understand if Plymouth fans feel
aggrieved.

(Swansea v
Hull)
Ben Toner - A penalty was awarded for handball against Egan.
This is quite frankly a poor decision. The ball doesn’t hit
Egan’s hand, it actually hits his head. Again though, I can
understand why the penalty is awarded because it is away from
his body slightly raised. But, as I said, this is not the case
and this was the wrong decision.

(Bristol City v
Sunderland)
Oliver Langford - Red Card for DOGSO against Hume. I’m really
not sure on this one. It’s whether there is enough contact for a
foul because the DOGSO part is straightforward. The problem is
when I watch the replays I do not see any meaningful contact
that would cause Wells to go to ground. However, I may be wrong
but it does seem that this was also a harsh call.

(Watford v
Burnley)
Matthew Donohue - Two red cards in this game issued to Watford
players (Sissoko and Kayembe). Sissoko with a moment of madness
to forcefully push a Burnley player in the chest at a kickoff
after the Burnley player put a hand on him. Donohue was looking
straight at it and it was an easy 2nd YC to award. Later in the
game, Kayembe jumped up to challenge for the ball but in doing
so put an arm/elbow into the Burnley players face. Again,
looking straight at it a pretty easy decision for Donohue.
Just some other things, Tom Kirk with a correct penalty call for
Portsmouth in a thrilling game at Carrow Road. Nunez took the
attackers feet away from him. And finally an interesting piece
of play for Stephen Martin where the Sheffield Wednesday keeper
took a quick kick after picking the ball up but the ball came
straight back off of Wilmot’s back and into the goal. Some
Wednesday players were unhappy that the goal was awarded saying
he deliberately blocked the ball but I’m not so sure.
All in all, another crazy weekend of championship football

Seriously? You really think that decision is supportable? There
was no push there was no foul , 50/50 decision ??? Really?this
is a disgraceful decision and certainly not one of a competent
official. If I say what I really think I will have to ban myself
.

Totally agree with the comments on the above post. Never a
penalty. Poor decision in my opinion. Not the decision you want
when you’re struggling for survival in the league. Plymouth will
probably appeal

The Sunderland one is supportable but I don't like, minimal
contact then the striker has enough time to assess his options
before throwing himself to the ground.
I've probably complained about not getting penalties for that
level of contact as well though.

I might be in the minority but I think Anthony Backhouse gets it
spot on. There is a push, and he is the only one complaining
which says a lot, everyone else is fuming at the player.

Wells ran straight across Trai Hume and the referee fell for it.
He was quick to get the red card out but he wasn't helped by
being surrounded by Bristol players. They celebrated as though
they'd won the league

Separate note to the officials highlighted - I thought Thomas
Kirk was excellent at Norwich vs Pompey yesterday. Managed an 8
goal game well with 4 backable YCs. For me, correct first half
penalty call too with positive decision making at all times.
Thought his ARs were also very good. Fantastic game of football
enabled by great performance from team ref!

A fantastic advantage for Norwich’s second goal as well to add.

Oliver Langford sending off Trai Hume there is an argument for
both cases HOWEVER unknowingly he has helped Sunderland
enormously.
We are all but guaranteed fourth place and have been so for a
number of weeks so the head coach has been rotating the squad to
keep key players [ of which Trai is one} fresh and free from
injury before the play off campaign begins.
Trai was going to be rested anyway on Easter Monday as he has a
troublesome hip injury and been playing through the pain barrier
for a number of weeks so almost two full games out of the side
will be an enormous help in the long run.
