Darren Cann Retiring

PGMOL have announced that Darren Cann’s game at Man City this
weekend will be his final game before retirement, with over 1000
games in all competitions. Best wishes to him and
congratulations on a stellar career!

Seems an odd time to retire but fair play for his commitment
since he started, one of the best assistant referees we’ve seen!

I think Darren Cann is simply the best who has ever done it. And
he has more or less every major accolade and record to prove it.
Furthermore, unrivalled longevity - a decade and a half after
officiating the World Cup final, he remains a top level
official.
With the opening up of audio in recent years, we have seen how
much useful input Darren Cann often provides referees when they
make major decisions. I can only imagine how many times in his
579 games he has saved a referee from making a huge error - just
read Howard Webb's book, he lists quite a few. I think he fit
the role of assistant referee perfectly, aside from being a
superlative 'linesman' in the old fashioned sense, his
contribution to officiating a game benefitted far beyond calling
offside.
I hope to god he is being lined up for a top coaching role, if
not with the PGMOL then with UEFA or FIFA - if he wants it, he
would be an invaluable resource. Like Mike Dean, for those of us
who follow officiating, Darren Cann is one of the few officials
who became themselves part of the fabric of the premier league -
the sun is up, the sky is blue, Darren Cann has a flag in his
hand. It is hard to believe that won't be true anymore after
Saturday!
When Jarred Gillett blows the final whistle at the Etihad, the
curtain will come down on a glittering career, and one of the
most talented officials of all time will exit stage left. I will
miss seeing Darren Cann plying his trade so ably. I wish him
every happiness for the future.

Well said, as someone who was lucky enough to be his colleague
at many matches when he was just beginning many years ago,
Norfolk's best. I hope his talent is not lost to the game.

What more fitting way for the best Assistant Ref of his
generation to finish his career at the ground of the best team
of his generation. A perfect conclusion to a fantastic career
and, as others have said, surely a top job with the FA awaits

I don't know how many times Darren has been AR for Palace games,
but I'm glad he's finishing with a Palace fixture. I hope he
gets acknowledged on Saturday for all the work he has done over
the years, and I wish him all the best for the future. And a
Pointless winner as well, so a man of many talents.

The absolute best in the business. Going to be strange not
seeing him on the line anymore. I hope Man City and Palace
organise something to give him the send off he deserves

A model professional. Very rarely made a mistake, and almost
certainly the best AR of the Premier League era, if not longer.
Hopefully they retain his knowledge to help develop assistant
referees for years to come
