Alex Chilowicz, Neil Hair and Farai Hallam with the promotion
clashes, whilst James Oldham oversees the 2 just outside the
bottom two. Ben Toner has the “last chance saloon” match between
Morecambe and Carlisle, I could see that one getting
troublesome. Garreth Rhodes gets another fixture with local
pride on the line with Barnet closing in on being champions too.
Richard Eley for our trip to South Wales, I was not at all
impressed with him in February so I do hope Saturday brings
better fortunes in our own playoff hunt!
Well someone likes him !
A Trophy quarter final and a Vase semi-final. Would have thought
they could share those sorts of game out more equitably amongst
the officials.
Not forgetting an FA Youth Cup Semi Final too!
I hadn't been aware of the Youth Cup semi in addition to the
other two plum appointments. Even more unfair.
Since he performed (perfectly well) at Roots Hall in early
February, 5 of his 7 league appointments have been Football
League matches, 3 of them League One.
I say he performed perfectly well, other than the rather serious
error of allowing the two teams to play in virtually
indistinguishable colours - one changed at half-time.
Anyway someone has certainly got his back !

Richard Eley was one of the better ones we have had at Southend
this year.

I’m guessing Paul Marsden isn’t on the list of better ones
who’ve officiated Southend…

Newport County AFC (First Team) v Colchester United FC (First
Team)
Football League 2
Referee: Eley, Richard
Assistant Referee: Amey, Justin
Assistant Referee: Fudge, Samuel
Fourth Official: Amphlett, Marvyn
The last time I saw Richard, it was one of the worser
performances i’ve seen this season, but I’m happy to see that
today was one of, if not, the best!
Not the easiest game to manage with Newport seemingly wanting to
leave a bit on our players, whilst our players were guilty of
feigning injury at times. He breezed through the first half with
flying colours. There was one penalty box incident which I
didn’t see but appeared to be an off the ball incident. Richard
and AR1 gave a yellow card to Newport’s 4, which seemed
reasonable.
The second half the game got better which reduced the
shenanigans from both teams. He missed 2 or 3 minor fouls and
perhaps was a little slack on punishing the position of free
kicks and throw ins, especially us, but in general, another
strong half. There was one excellent decision for an illegal
block by one of our players which killed a 1 on 1 chance
correctly spotted by Richard. AR1 had a tight offside call for
the first goal, some of our fans thought it was offside but I
would say it looks onside on the replays.
All in all, Excellent from Richard and team today, well done to
them, i’m very happy to be proven wrong!
The only other, very sad, incident was an allegation of racism
from a Newport fan to one of our players. I’m yet to see the
incident but am told it was clear on the TV feed, so hopefully
clear evidence should the offender be guilty. Full credit to
Richard, Tovide was wanting a scrap at half time but as he ran
past where the fan was to start the second half, Richard made a
point of walking with him with his arm round him, a sign that
Richard is a very kind-hearted person as well as an official.

Crazy game for Tom Kirk today at Swindon and a tricky one for
Neil Hair at Doncaster v Wimbledon with a red apiece.

Well I’ve just got home from the most bonkers of games at the
County Ground and it’s fair to say we didn’t get the rub of the
green from Tom Kirk today. The red card is correct, no arguments
there and Smallwood should lose the armband for that. And the
referee didn’t decide to play 7-1-1 in the second half. But all
the little calls went against us, including a clear YC for SPA
not given to Will Wright for a foul on our full back down the
left wing midway through the 2nd half.
A couple of corners were also incorrectly awarded to Swindon and
I don’t think the reaction from their players towards our centre
half after the winning goal is very sporting. Our players
certainly wouldn’t react that way.
Our captain cost us the game but in my opinion Mr Kirk cost us a
point by failing to send Harry Smith off at 4-4 for a blatant
non footballing action, forcefully barging Shepherd in the back
off the ball. He played a part in the winning goal.
It wasn’t a disastrous day at the office but he’s certainly had
better, the fact a game has ended 5-4 and people are talking
about the ref shows it wasn’t his finest hour.
*Edit* Completely forgot to mention the cracking advantage in
the lead up to our fourth goal, fair play for that!

I’d agree with most of your assessment from the highlights that
I’ve seen. The RC looked pretty clear cut. But the actions of
Swindon players at the end towards your centre back was very
unsportsmanlike. Did anyone get a card for that per chance?
Harry Smith is known for being a nasty piece of work in the
league anyway. There often seems to be some controversy
surrounding him one way or the other

I don’t think anyone was carded, but could easily have been
under unsporting behaviour. Only issue is it would’ve had to be
a booking for each player including a second yellow
He’s a good player but been at it for years. He scored against
us for Orient in 2021 and celebrated by pretending to light a
cigarette. He was adamant it was unintentional but as you say
he’s always in the headlines for the wrong reasons. Not a nice
bloke it seems

It was really nice to have an experienced premier league referee
at new lawn yesterday in Graham Scott, few excellent decision
making and got the dive from a forest green player absolutely
spot and booked him too. Happy to have him referee us again not
because of the result but for a fair referee. Isn’t he retiring
at the end of the season

Looks like good decisions all round. I think Neil got
intervention from one of his team for the Wimbledon red, he goes
for a yellow originally.
