Despite the views of the ever so clueless Lucy Ward and Darren
Fletcher on TNT, I think Darren's done quite well to keep this
game from boiling over. Penalty is softish but I'd say good
strong foul detection on his part to give it.
One thing I will say is that he referees more orientated towards
Var than I've seen with other officials. Even with clear and
obvious fouls he keeps letting play go on to see if anything
happens before calling the foul. It's almost as if he's doubting
himself everytime

I can imagine Howard Webb saying they’d prefer no penalty in
that scenario - incredibly soft decision and not in keeping at
all to what he didn’t penalise at other times.
Very messy end to the match too. He definitely blew full time
then realised there was time left for a free kick…

I don't think that's a penalty, even if there is some contact
there was no way near enough to bring a player down and he was
looking for it. Darren England struck me as being a bit
flustered all game, and that might well be why we saw the
bizarre situation at the end where he blew for full time only to
then change his mind.

There was a similar incident as the penalty in the West Brom v
Sunderland game going on at the same time that resulted in a
yellow card for simulation.

The penalty, in my view, was on the soft side; but not so soft
as to warrant a VAR intervention given their current guidelines.
What was really poor was the nonsense at the end of the game.
To have blown the final whistle only to be advised / reminded /
persuaded by players that the minimum amount of additional time
has not yet elapsed and then be forced to continue with play is
(or should be) embarrassing.
Get the basics right and a referee has half a chance of
succeeding with the more complicated stuff. Get the basics
wrong ......

hi,
i thought darren had a poor game, even to the extent that, at
times, the crowd were almost refereeing the game. he seemed
hesitant in his decision making. the incident of the premature
end of the game was frankly bizarre.
regarding the penalty - in 'real time' i thought it was a
penalty, but immediately changed my mind after seeing replays.
however, i don't think it changed the overall outcome of the
game - everton looked dangerous on every attack at that stage of
the match.
highlight of the game was the 9th minute round of appreciation
for kevin campbell - who was most certainly SUPER for both
teams. r.i.p.
