I've had my say on the red card so won't say anything further,
other than to note that in terms of refereeing it is really all
that will be remembered from this game.
Otherwise Sam Barrott was ok, but only ok. I agree with
Whistleblower, he didn't look at all at ease to me and I never
had the feeling that he had the game in his 'back pocket' so to
speak. These are very challenging occasions, one can only learn
through experience, and I think Sam Barrott has much learning to
do after tonight. While he has had a meteoric rise, how he
responds to a difficult evening and a sub par performance on the
biggest stage will be a bigger measure of his potential than any
challenge he has faced thus far.
My personal advice, which is very arrogant of me to offer to
someone as talented as Sam Barrott, would be - toughen up. He
could take a touch of John Brooks when he deals with players. He
allowed them to crowd him too many times and a number of quite
public displays of dissent were totally ignored. Far stronger
body language is required.
While I supported his appointment, I can't pretend it worked out
well. Still though, I think it is merely a bump on the road to a
very successful career at the top level.

I don't know whether you are an active referee Phil, but I can
say as both a referee and an observer there was absolutely no
scope for disallowing the Liverpool goal for offside. There
might have been five years ago, but there certainly isn't today.
It wasn't too much for him, he had an excellent game apart from
missing an SFP challenge. I know that sounds a bit daft, but if
referees were 100% spotting SFP challenges before we wouldn't
have needed VAR. He really got very little wrong tonight. If
it had been a referee where the game was "too much for him" he
would have fallen apart and crumbled after the potentially
controversial decisions, not effortlessly kept full control
until the end of the game.

I agree he did not crumble which is a mark of credit. However I
think you are being extremely and, from my standpoint, unduly
generous to call his performance "excellent". There was far too
much tolerance of open dissent for me to award such an accolade.

I am indeed still active although after 35+ years I will concede
that I'm somewhat in decline physically at least.
Despite the best efforts of folk to persuade us that Offside
decisions are factual rather than subjective I would still aver
that I have seen them given.
My major grouse is that Sam Barrott allowed Van Dyke far, far
too much latitude in terms of dissent by not punishing him for
repeatedly "chipping in" on too many decisions.
With your Observer hat on do you have a view?

I watched Diogo Jota sarcastically clap the decision after he
was booked for dissent, I watched that thinking Sam could book
him again, which he didn't.
It's one of those where it could be given but its more likely to
not be given, although we saw it with Michael Oliver and Diogo
Dalot last season.

There’s nothing more to be said about the blatant red card that
was missed but nobody has mentioned that there should have been
another. Pickford has previously put a Liverpool player out for
almost a year by assaulting him after the ball was dead and
nobody has picked up that Nunez was extremely fortunate he
wasn’t injured in the same way. That “challenge” used excessive
force and endangered an opponent yet the only disciplinary
action was a YC for Nunez, presumably for reentering the field
of play without permission. It was violent conduct unless like
Kane on Robertson at Tottenham a few years ago red cards aren’t
given to England internationals.
I was at the game and thought the referee was poor. He allowed
far too much holding and it came as no surprise that Jota
eventually received a yellow card for dissent after he was again
wrestled to the ground and the referee ignored it.
I don’t understand why PGMOL appointed a relatively
inexperienced official to this game. He looked out of his depth.

One thing I never understand is why on earth have they punished
the referees by basing them at soulless, depressing Stockley
Park. Parks are places of joy (usually), this is a business park
with a fake lake and a few token trees. It is business park
armaggedon. I was there for five days on a job, and it is just
the pits. Mr Tierney has spent the last year driving from the
North, getting stuck on the M1, M6, M25, working at a location
that is dreadful, and his only escape is a night out in
Uxbridge. That is why he made a mistake imo. I applaud his
bravery in putting up with Stockley Park for a year.
