Firstly I agree that there was potential scope for the Liverpool
Goal to be disallowed for offside.
Secondly, why is Barrott allowing Van Dyke to stick his oar in
to every decision he feels inclined to get involved with.
I do think he's a decent Referee, he will become, I believe, a
very good one. However I think this may just be too much for
him this evening

Haven't seen it, but purely from this description - no, simply
being stood in an offside position is not an offence.
Offside offences are:
- playing the ball
- preventing opponent from being able to play the ball by
obstructing line of vision
- challenging opponent for ball
- clearly attempting to play ball and it impacts on opponent
- obvious action which clearly impacts on opponent's ability to
play ball

The amount of dissent Barrott has let go tonight has been awful.

My summary of Sam’s performance.
Clearly wrong KMI for Tarkowski challenge on MacAllister.
Tierney’s decision is inexcusable.
He was generally ok, as mentioned dissent was not particularly
punished. I’d imagine that was a conscious decision taken by
him. His foul detection was pretty average as well.
I would hope that Barrott would be disappointed when he reflects
on his performance because of the exceptionally good standards
he has set this season. However, for a referee’s first major
Derby I think he’s done fine. We’ve seen before how derbies can
get away from a referee quite quickly and the match never looked
like exceeding boiling point. Sam will only get better by
learning from these games. We can’t say he is a world class
elite referee until he can handle these games with ease. Sam
will learn and benefit from the experience and having these
types of games I think will only improve his performances for
the years to come.

There is no way under the current law this can be disallowed.
Diaz was stood still, he hasn't made any attempt to play the
ball, he hasn't prevented an opponent from being able to play
the ball, and he hasn't obstructed the vision of anyone.

The Merseyside Derby has historically brought out some pretty
poor performances from top match officials. I remember Phil
Dowd's howler in 2013, Graham Poll's on a couple of occasions
and Martin Atkinson's with Rodwell's red card.
I stared in the thread for the Goodison Park fixture earlier
this season that I thought Michael Oliver was not the best
appointment for that fixture (mostly due to his dip in form) and
I feel the same could be said for Barrott here. It requires an
experienced referee who is in form. On this basis, PGMOL have in
my opinion not appointed the most suitable match officials for
either fixture and have quite frankly left Barrott hung out to
dry tonight.
As for Tierney on VAR, I don't have words for his howler this
evening.

Tierney has most probably done what his bosses want.
This appears to be trying to manage the game/occasion rather
than referee to the laws of the game.
There is no wonder with decisions like this fans think referees
make it up as they go along.
The pgmol hierarchy are the problem not the solution, if they
cant stand up to their paymasters then they should resign unless
of course an easy life is what they want.

The non award of the red card was exceptionally poor from
Barrott, however Tierney's culpability is just about off the
scale. Surely he needs to further training as what constitutes
the varying degrees of foul play if he is to carry on as a
senior VAR
This would be a challenging match for any referee and Barrott
did not crumble under the pressure. The only way to get
experience of these high profile matches with a febrile
atmosphere is to referee them. I thought he tolerated far too
much dissent and at times his body language did not suggest
confidence.
I think Barrott is a very good referee and has the potential to
become an exceptional one. This is going to be a very big
learning experience for him.
Slightly tangential but I am left feeling that, at this moment
in time, John Brooks is considerably ahead of Sam Barrott in
referee development in that his grip on matches and the antics
of players is more stringent and assured.

The fact you’ve completely ignored the main - and obvious -
talking point kind of invalidates your reasonable points above.
I think it’s clear the most controversial VAR incident was the
Diaz “goal” at Spurs. On reflection, that was a communication
error. That tonight was a disgrace. Barott got it wrong but how
Tierney can review it and say yellow is right is beyond
unbelievable.
People are saying that PGMOL are indecisive on SFP but we’ll
have Webb coming out in a couple of weeks saying it was wrong,
we’ll look at it etc etc. not good I’m afraid
