Re: Liverpool v Everton Sam Barrott

Sky just reviewed it and both experts agreed red. Ticks all the
boxes for the considerations in such circumstances and credit to
Sky, they showed the list. I fail to see why red was given, and
while accepting that the on field referee can miss it, there is
a part of me that feels referees play safe knowing that VAR will
bail them out, but more alarmingly, a yellow makes it more
likely the game will remain 11 v 11.
Still baffled!

front of the tackle, facing out from the corner. There you can
see the contact high up on Mac Allister’s left leg with one
foot, and low on the right leg with the other foot. That’s the
foot in closest view of the referee, who is also at a slight
angle as he was about to turn and follow play upfield.

Barrott is probably too close, if he was a bit further back and

it’s as easy for the referee as being made out, I think most
referees on field would have likely reached the same decision
with the one second he had to view the incident, especially
given the ball was played clearly first. Added to the intensity
of the occasion it’s always going to be a tough call to make.

tackle used excessive force and endangered safety.

I think you make a lot of good points, especially about Barrott
being too close and I agree with much of what you said.
Still though, I would be more critical of Barrott than you are.
I accept a lot of what you say, but, the lunging nature of the
tackle through the ball and the force and intensity still to me
make it a very poor miss on field. I think it fits into the
category of - so bad you just have to get right. I think in the
VAR era we sometimes offer too many excuses for referees, I am
not suggesting you have done that in your excellent post, but I
do think he should have caught it.
As you rightly say, inexcusable for VAR to not get involved.
[/quote]
As I started with, it’s clearly a red card, and ultimately the
buck stops with the referee. He’ll be disappointed when he sees
it back I’m sure, and as an elite referee we expect them to get
it right.
My explanation was more an interpretation on why he got it
wrong. These things are so much easier to see on the TV than
live in the moment on field…

Can someone tell me the roll of the AVAR? Surely he is just as
responsible as Tierney

A real shame for Barrott that he has missed the ferocity of the
challenge. So definitely a KMI error.
However, Tierney as VAR should really be the one carted off to
the headmasters office for a dressing down for not recommending
a review. Even the tea lady would be on to Barrott for a review!
As our well esteemed contributors have alluded too, SFP is
really becoming an issue and the interpretation thereof.
Webb needs to get some action plan in place to address this
issue pretty sharpish.

Very fair point, I'm largely in agreement.

P45 for Tierney straight after the game. Sorry if that seems
harsh, but he has failed just about everyone there. The players,
the fans, his peers, his bosses. It’s not just incompetence,
it’s sheer negligence. If someone at his level cannot see that
tackle for what it is, then they do not deserve to be in that
job. Absolutely shocking dereliction of duties.

I think that's the worst VAR call I've seen since it's been
introduced. The most straightforward red you're ever likely to
see. Tierney should never be put on VAR again after that -
simply unbelievable.

I think I'll be in the minority, however I think Liverpool
possibly could have had their goal disallowed as per Neville on
comms.
Without Diaz standing in an offside position the mixup between
the Everton players wouldn't have happened and therefore no goal
for Jota.
As a Liverpool fan I'm happy but I would've disallowed. Is it
just me who thinks this?

I think this may well be the only time that I would agree with
the expected onslaught that will be heading from Hackett in the
next day or two.
He will be frothing at the mouth…
