The current coaching structure and set-up, all the way down to
grassroots now means 95% of referees will become manufactured
and robotic - very few with personalities or the ability to
think for themselves with come through the system
Manufactured referees are great when “nothing” happens in a game
- all very fit, look the part and have excellent signals and the
like. However as soon as a game becomes challenging, something
unusual happens or they have to think outside the box they fall
apart and struggle
Despite the staggering sums now being spent and invested in
refereeing and the top heavy coaching structure ( read the
recent articles of the PGMO Funding ) refereeing is not
improving to justify the spend

Personally, I have always felt that Mr. Clattenburg's supposed
'strategy' for the infamous Chelsea Tottenham game is more of a
justification, after the fact, to attempt to explain away a bad
performance in an extremely challenging game.

Was never a fan of Poll. For me he was below average when it
came to big decisions/KMI's and he relied too much on his
ego/personality. I always preferred Rennie, Wiley and Bennett
from that era with Dean, Webb and Dowd the top 3 later, who were
far better referees

Collina certainly deserves every ounce of love and respect
Clattenburg offers as he was a very powerful advocate and
promoter of his international career.

without any question.

I suspect you never saw Bill Evans, Reg Leafe or Ken Dagnall, in
addition to Joe Worrell. And that’s just the English referees I
could mention.

Referees in those days had personalities in no particular order
I enjoyed Dowd , Dunn , Durkin , Bennett, Styles , Mike Reed
and Willard , one of the worse to get promoted was Paul Danson
from Leicester. , he earned the nickname “Dirty Danson “ for his
love of dishing out cards like confetti

I found Styles too fussy at times. Bennett was always a strict
disciplinarian and rarely had clean sheets in his matches.
Wiley was the embodiment of calm and unflappability and deserved
the big games he got.

I’m of an age to which i would have not seen anything of these
esteemed officials. I suppose my field of comparison with past
officials is fairly narrow.
