Mark Clattenburg Interview on The Overlap

A very interesting interview with some interesting topics
discussed.
- Role at Nottingham Forest and the Everton v Forest game
- Player and manager incidents
- Impacts of social media
- Reflection on UCL final and Merseyside derbies
- Who is the best referee in the prem right now
- Rule changes
Well worth the hour to listen to in my opinion. Out of anything
I hope it shows more football fans the difficulties that
refereeing poses because it is not the simple job that many make
it out to be

How well did he come across !! Excellent.
It made me think back to those glory years, when in fact I use
to critic against clattenburg/Webb etc, but looking back they
were top notch, and he was was a magnificent referee
clattenburg. Interesting about how he use to handle Manchester
United with a few choise words for Ferdinand to pass back to
Ferguson…
Those were referees with personality, confidence, decisive
decision makers, not the robots we encounter in 2025, who I
honestly feel sorry for.
Todays crop could do with looking back to 2016 when Clsttenburg
did Chelsea v Tottenham, spurs going for title and his game plan
was let spurs just lose it but no red cards, instead book 9
spurs players but don’t dare send anyone off, at the time I
thought the game plan was awful, but 10 years on it was
excellent.

Collina certainly deserves every ounce of love and respect
Clattenburg offers as he was a very powerful advocate and
promoter of his international career.

Certainly that "love" comes across in MC's book and in equal but
opposite the "hate" of the English system
A referee who, like Collina, was probably appreciated more on
foreign soils than he was at home

Not convinced by his explanation of the Nottingham Forest
situation at all - think his behaviour in that time was pretty
shoddy and don't think he's really reflected on that enough.

without any question.

Well, that is one heck of a claim. I'm not sure absolutely
everyone in Italy would agree with that statement and sadly
neither can I. Better than Joe Worrall ? I don't think so my
friend.

His handling of chelsea tottenham is one of the worst in living
memory. Yes Tottenham were cardinal sinners but he failed to
control the game with shocking antics across the game not being
clamped down on. It is a miracle nobody was seriously injured.
He failed in his mandate to protect players on the field!

Of all the referees i worked with in my career Clattenburg would
be No 2 on my list - (Graham Poll being the best by a country
mile ) - Marks performance on the Chelsea - Spurs game was one
of the worst Prem performances I have seen - he got it
completely wrong from minute one and was never, ever in control
of the game

My view entirely. A loose cannon that day and perhaps explains
why we have so many manufactured referees. Don't get me wrong,
our current referees are very good especially given how the game
has changed and the attention of the media. It's a shame and I'm
struggling to suggest another current referee who has
"personality" although I like watching Simon Hooper who looks as
if he is enjoying himself and appears to give back what he
receives. Sam Barrott, a fine referee, comes over as boring. And
there is nothing wrong in that by the way.
Going back to that Chelsea game, Clattenburg may have wished
he'd handled it differently, and I can think of a game Webb did
where he got things wrong, but criticism should be reserved for
the players.
