       ICC Elite Panel 2025/26

The ICC have announced two changes to the Elite Panel for
2025/26. Joel Wilson and Michael Gough are out, replaced by Alex
       Wharf and Allahudien Paleker.
  HTML https://www.icc-cricket.com/news/two-new-faces-join-the-icc-elite-panel-of-umpires
No surprise about Wilson, he has been poor since he joined the
Panel and was probably lucky to stay so long. Absolutely shocked
that Gough is gone. He is one of the best umpires going around.
Surely this is more related to family reasons instead of poor
performance? He is far better than Wharf IMO!

I have to say I am very surprised. Surprised in the first
instance that Gough has been removed from the panel. I can only
assume that this is his personal choice given he is one of the
stronger performers on the panel. I wonder if he will replace
       Wharf on England's international panel?
Secondly, surprised to see that Wharf has been chosen to step
up. That’s 2 seasons in a row that I feel Chris Brown has been
somewhat overlooked for promotion, which I find quite
       surprising.
In terms of Wilson, no real surprises, and I also feel as though
Paleker is a very good addition to the elite panel. He always
seems to perform well in the matches I’ve seen him in.
Looking forward, I wonder how long we will see Illingworth and
Tucker remain on the panel? The next T20 World Cup could see a
few new faces make an appearance at an ICC tournament.

What I think is Gough's exit is more likely a personal decision.
More and more umpires now have chosen to step down from
international umpiring (especially the Elite Panel) and focus
more on leagues and domestic matches. Paul Wilson and Marais
Erasmus stood down from international umpiring last year and are
seen doing T20 leagues. I will be surprised if Gough's exit is
       due to performance.
Joel Wilson was long due to go.
I feel Wharf was due before Saikat joined the panel, but I think
it is just that they could not onboard a fourth Englishman in
the elite panel last year. I believe Wharf was in the reckoning
before Brown. But yeah, Brown is also due to join in next.
I think umpires nearing 60 years or more will retire next year
(probably Tucker, Illingworth and Reiffel). But yeah neither of
the three are bad enough to be removed.
Also heard that Jayaraman Madanagopal from India has been added
to the emerging panel. Wonder who will be the other one joining
the emerging panel after the promotion of Palekar and Wharf to
       the elite panel.

Though I’m surprised and disappointed to see Gough leave the
panel, it’s clear that he wasn’t that highly rated by the ICC
apart from the WTC final in 2021, Illingworth and Kettleborough
were always chosen ahead of him for ICC semi finals and finals.
I’ve never rated Wilson and agree this was decision a long time
coming but it’s only a few weeks ago that he was appointed TV
umpire for the champions trophy final!
Slightly surprised to see Paleker appointed to the elite panel
for Brown and also Rusere were ahead of him and had both umpired
in more notable test matches. No surprise to see Wharf elevated
to the panel but always thought it would be when Illingworth
       retired!

All very interesting. As others note, surely a personal decision
from Gough a la Taufel to spend more time with family,
notwithstanding his relative lack of major finals was clearly
highly rated. I always feel a bit sorry for people who appear to
have been dropped for performance reasons but Wilson was clearly
below par statistically and seemed to have lost some faith with
players (eg. media reports re: Kuhnemann throwing report).
Did also think Wharf and Brown were first two due for promotion,
one does wonder if the need to balance national representation
on the panel also plays a part. Will be interesting to see if
both are replaced on the Emerging Panel, if Madanagopal is
already on you would think he would also be joined by Nogajski
or Riaz based on the World T20

Candidates to replace Palleker and Wharf on the international
       panel?
Gough is an elite performance referee, if he left due to reduced
workload he could be a candidate, but apart from him who would
       you recommend?
As for the South African panel I think Jele could return, I
found his removal in the past strange.

I think the reason behind Chris Brown was not promoted to ICC
ELITE UMPIRES is his inconsistency in decision making.
For example, In the ongoing NZ vs PAK T20Is , his lbw and caught
behind decisions are all wrong , nearly all decisions were wrong
       . Even in women's T20I series against AUS-W and SL-W series ,
his decisions were wrong . So , Inconsistency in decision making
might be the reason for not promoting him into ICC Elite Panel.

In relation to Michael Gough, his drunk driving ban (and failure
to stop) in August of last year would not have endeared him to
       his employers.

For England if Gough doesn’t go back on the International panel,
I reckon James Middlebrook would be in with a good shout.
Middlebrook umpired in the Hundred eliminator and a T20 blast
semi final. He also umpired in this years SA20 which was a
prelude last year to Russell Warren being appointed to the
       international panel.

I don't think Nogajski will be added. He had a poor run in T20
WC itself. Some of the decisions were questionable. Most
probably it would be Riaz if they decide to add 2.
