Jesus, what a poor showing from Paul Marsden at Crewe v Grimsby
last night. When you have both sets of fans singing “you don’t
know what you’re doing” it kind of sums it up. Really
inconsistent from the get go. First KMI came in the early first
half with a penalty shout for Crewe and it certainly looked one.
Striker turned the defender then gets hauled down. (But then he
kept on giving this foul everywhere else on the pitch). He
failed to play a lot of advantages, one where Grimsby was
through and he pulled it back. That really annoyed the Grimsby
faithful and rightly so. This trend continued over and over
again. He missed several fouls for both teams and our captain
was lucky not to be sent off for a second bookable offence. Last
night, I witnessed the weirdest play in football I’ve ever seen.
High foot in the box for Crewe, they got an indirect free kick
instead of a pen which was certainly correct because there
wasn’t any contact. From that resulting indirect free kick, the
ball went out for a Crewe throw. Our player sent a long one into
the box and it went straight in. Crewe were determined that it
touched the Grimsby gk. After a very long discussion with AR2, a
goal kick was the outcome. Moving on, again really inconsistent
and annoyed both sets of fans to the point where both were
sarcastically cheering when he got a throwing correct. Added on
10 mins second half which was fair and could’ve been more. He
wore the dreaded yellow kit. Positives? He got the two incidents
for the indirect free kick and long throw correct, had a whistle
and a yellow card. Other than that, a pretty poor showing im
afraid and for the love of all that’s mercy, keep him in the NL.
I was there for once on a Tuesday evening, and I am in full
agreement with your assessment of Paul. The double incident in
the 2nd half was extraordinary, even for someone of my
footballing vintage. I thought the indirect free kick in the
Grimsby penalty area was a cop-out for not giving a penalty, but
I think you're right in saying there was no contact with the
Crewe forward, so maybe an indirect free kick was correct,
although I can't remember the last time I saw an IFK given for
this sort of offence. A goal kick was the correct decision when
the ball went into the goal direct from the throw in, but why
did it take so long for Marsden and Khan to reach this decision?
Either it touched someone or it didn't, and both Paul and Abbas
would have been perfectly placed when the throw in was taken to
see. Agree fully about poor use of the advantage rule, I could
see David Artell going ballistic on the touchline, and Mark
Ryder must have regretted being appointed to this game as 4O.
Too far away to comment on the first half penalty shout but
Marsden was right not to give Crewe a penalty in the 2nd half,
there not being enough force imo to give it. Yellow cards were
mostly justified, but the flurry of cards in the 2nd half
clearly demonstrated how tetchy the game had become. Positives -
Paul was very fit and up with play, and you could see him a mile
off in his lovely yellow shirt! Overall, not a good evening for
Mr Marsden, but we were happy in the end even if Mr Artell was
not on his return to Gresty Road.

I was reading thoughts of Crewe and Grimsby fans on a football
forum about Mr Marsden and they were not complimentary!
Interesting getting Ryan and AT’s thoughts from a refereeing
perspective are broadly similar.
Only seen brief highlights of Rovers losing at Harrogate, but
the away fans opinion of Zac Kennard-Kettle’s handling of the
game were minimal so he must have done reasonably well

Does Marsden ever have a good game?
I’ve not seen him officiate so can’t offer a first hand opinion,
however the comments of our well respected and well informed
correspondents on here suggest that the majority of his matches
are not well received by the paying customers.
Was he demoted and then promoted? If so, how baffling.

Tuned into the Gillingham v Colchester game tonight as someone
who lives in Kent (despite still being an Ipswich fan). A few
comments on James Linington’s performance.
A game of two halves is often a phrase used to describe a
football match but I think this phrase can be used to describe
Linington’s performance this evening.
First half I was quite impressed. Foul detection was pretty good
with not every contact being a foul. He let it be a physical
battle without it overstepping the mark. There were some
questionable corner and throw in decisions where he and the AR’s
seemed unsure which way it should go. The first KMI was a big
decision for AR2 George Byrne. A massive question mark whether
the ball was out of play. In fairness to AR2, he had to look
through the goal to the other side which would have made it near
impossible to call with certainty. It was not clear the replays
either. Byrne kept his flag down the goal was awarded. I have no
issues with that.
Second half started to become a real mixed bag from Linington.
One KMI missed (imo) by a handball from the Colchester No4 (?)
where his arm was raised by his head. The only thing that was
questionable was proximity but I think the arm was in too much
of an unnatural position. Reminded me of the penalty Man City
got vs Bournemouth in the FA Cup this weekend. Then another KMI
for which a penalty was awarded for some grappling in the box
between Gills No12 and Colchester No18. Couldn’t see the
incident from the sky sports replays. Didn’t seem to be too much
arguing from the players though. I think foul detection became a
little bit scruffy in the second half and to deal with small off
the ball incidents too (most notably between Gills No20 and
Colchester captain). All yellow cards went to Colchester with
some I think on the harsh side. One for delaying the restart
when I thought the ball got thrown into the players face which I
found a bit laughable. Also went over to the dugout to speak to
both managers about something which I couldn’t see.
As I said, a real mixed bag from Linington - a 50/50 performance
where I can’t decide between good or poor. As for the game,
Colchester were lucky to escape with a point but Gills couldn’t
take enough of their chances showing why they are the lowest
scorers in the league. I await elbee94’s report with interest
just to see what you think about his performance.
Excellent report TA, you’ve hit all the points I had and I
pretty much agree with everything. First half was mostly fine,
no conclusive evidence either way for the goal and it appears to
have split Gills fans too, so hard to criticise George Byrne.
AR1 Ian Cooper though, I was really surprised by, he was looking
to James to make simple decisions that were much closer to him,
it really did look like his first EFL game, not a man who has
ran the line in the Championship for many years.
Second half was very bitty and I’ll give James praise for his
gesturing and clearly as a supporter being able to understand
what he was indicating even if I didn’t agree with them all.
Agree that probably should have been 2 pens for Gills, I didn’t
have a great view of the one that was given but fans and players
were adamant, although Hawkins was pulling Egbo’s shirt just as
much before that. Yellow card for Thorn was a terrible decision,
even if inconsequential with a Gills player flicking it right at
him. I didn’t see what the Simpson one was for. The conversation
was with AR1 and 4O and both managers after the non-penalty so a
few words between EFL veteran managers and officials I imagine.
We certainly did escape with a point and with a beaten up team
through injury and a nasty virus that we just can’t get out of
the dressing room at the moment. Feels like the top 7 chances
are dwindling, but it’s still on for now.

Would it surprise you that it was David Artell describing Paul
Marsden in last night's Crewe v Grimsby game? As I previously
said, some things never change, although I have to say I have
some sympathy for David.

2 late penalties for James Durkin at the County Ground, both
correct. Also featured an outing for his circular red card - he
had a rectangular one a few weeks ago!

He was promoted to the FL and then demoted back to NL. Then they
merged the level he was demoted to with the level he was demoted
from.

Marsden was a poor official in the National North circa 2015.
How on earth he got promoted to the NL and then the FL shortly
afterwards was baffling. With this new system he's got another
shot at the FL now but seemingly never really improves.
