Lewis Smith - Sunderland v Preston

Was having a pretty decent game but it all went belly up in the
80th minute. Sunderland were attacking down the left when the
Preston defender Porteous went down with a ' head injury '.
Lewis Smith stopped the game and next thing you know Porteous
rose from the dead like Lazarus.
He didn't require any treatment on the pitch but was told to go
off and by this time both teams were taking a drink. That's when
the fun really started . The Preston players started dropping
like flies by the touchline. Three of them, one after the other
which ended in players from both teams getting involved with
       pushing and shoving.
It took about 5 mins to sort it out but just as the referee was
about to restart the match it was pointed out to him that
Preston had 12 players on the field which was followed with
chants of 'You're not fit to referee' and 'You don't know what
       you're doing'.
The thing is Lewis Smith copped the flak but this situation was
caused by total s**thousery from Preston and their manager had
the nerve to blame the officials for Sunderland equalising.
       🙄

i confirm all to be a true account.
Preston North End tried every dark art trick in the book after
the non head injury occurred and the fact they have tried to
make Lewis Smith and his assistants and 4O the scapegoats makes
my opinion of that football club a disgrace to the game itself.
The number three for Preston was substituted however remained
away from the main confrontation and in my opinion did
everything to stay unnoticed on the far side after the
substitute entered the field therefore making Preston have
       eleven outfield players.
This isn't in any way at all questioning the integrity of the
referee who had an excellent game beforehand but the integrity
of a player and a football club.
Thankfully the game restarted with the optimum amount of
players otherwise goodness knows what the outcome would have
       been.
Sad that a great old side like Preston have had to plummet to
       such low depths.

I commented on Gavin Ward's performance ( or lack of ) when PNE
visited Norwich on 11th Feb. PNE certainly know what to do when
       winning away!

It all started as a coming together between the defender and
Sunderland forward Isodor in the penalty area. Naturally the
crowd scream for a penalty whilst in reality it was just
physical contact rather than a foul and no Sunderland player
appealed nor did the referee signal no penalty.
The ball was half cleared when Sunderland started to mount
another attack when the Preston player stayed on the ground.
Of course at this stage Lewis Smith had to act appropriately as
would any referee until the player then got up and as all this
was being sorted out another player collapsed to the ground who
then got treated before another then another did the same.
Six whole minutes elapsed before play restarted.

Surely this is on the fourth official. Why was the substitute
allowed on before the the substituted player had left the field
       of play?

I thought that Lewis Smith had an excellent game and he was
hardly to blame for the chaos caused by Preston North End's
       dubious tactics.
PNE's manager Heckinbottom is a serial complainer who whinges
about officials on a weekly basis. Their message board
PNE-Online was inundated with posts critical of their tactics
and they (the fans) laid the blame fairly and squarely at the
       door of their manager Heckinbottom.

If true it sounds as if Proud Preston have somewhat lost their
       pride.

to gain an advantage for his team" would be in my report.

Mark Lazarus would never have stooped that low !
For those who don't remember him, he chose football over boxing
for a career and played over 400 League matches, all but 9 of
which were for a wide selection of London clubs. Still with us,
now aged 86, he was possibly the first big name Jewish player.
