So another “easy game” for Taylor (United v Arsenal) - which is
exactly what some here were saying after that other recent low
key classic, City v Liverpool 😂. Why not give the ref
some credit in these circumstances?
I think the comment above about the good spirit between the
players says it all. That doesn’t just happen randomly.

No EPL game is easy. That is why I said "at this level." There
were numerous other EPL games this weekend that went smoothly
for the referee as there is every weekend. I don't suggest we
need a thread on each one praising the referee for a competent
performance. Of course, Man United v Arsenal is more high
profile, more challenging for the referee on paper - but the
game as it happens is all we can judge the referee on.
Indeed the good spirit between players does not happen randomly.
However, it is not entirely down to the referee either. Is the
appalling behavior we witnessed at the Europe league final
Taylor officiated his fault? Because he didn't control things
properly? Of course not, the circumstances, pressures and
personalities all play into it - as does the referee and his/her
actions.
So while I can give Anthony Taylor credit to a small degree for
the good behavior and spirits of the players, just as I would
with bad behavior, the main credit for that goes to the players
themselves. As the match developed, a UEFA elite referee should
have found those circumstances very easy to deal with.
As I said before, this was an expected level performance, in
what any observer would determine was an easy game at this
level. We can't have it both ways - there are either tougher
games than others or there are not, and, for a superb referee
like Anthony Taylor, this was not a tough game and he does not
deserve particular praise for doing his job competently.

I have always been of the view that a job done competently
merits praise just as a job done incompetently merits (
constructive ) criticism. That was certainly the practice I
adopted with my Pupils and those I was mentoring and it seemed
to work. The good performer is encouraged to continue putting in
good and even better performances and the poor performer is
encouraged to improve and strive towards a competent standard.

There I would agree, I don't mean to suggest competence isn't
worth praise, perhaps my previous post was a tad harsh.
What I am dissenting from are comments suggesting this was in
anyway a noteworthy performance, warranting labels like
"excellent." I just feel that should be reserved for tougher
tests.
Though, I confess, reading again all of the comments on this
thread, most are not making an assertion of excellence or
similar. Perhaps I have jumped the gun a little on this one,
though I do stand by what I have said - in general terms.

Taylors been one of our best refs this season. Certianly not
time for him to step down yet imo. At least keep him around so
he can help guide the next generation of FIFA Refs.
Plus I'd imagine he'll wanna make the world cup next year, UEFA
Still rate him highly, so I'd imagine there's always a chance
he's in the running for the CL Final.

I do believe that it should still be right that whenever we see
a good performance from a referee, we should respect it and
praise the referee on here.
As our administrators would say, this forum is not just for
constant criticism of our officials. When they deserve the
praise, we give them the praise because no other football fans
hardly give our officials an ounce of credit. aaa wanted to hear
about some positive performances the other week and we should
share them no matter who they were from.
Anthony Taylor ‘done what he needed to’ yesterday afternoon.
Nothing poor but nothing special. Just a solid performance
