Darren Bond Sunderland v Cardiff.

Can one of our lovely Mackem contributors answer a question for
me please ?
1-1 and a free kick to Sunderland around twenty five yards out.
The wall is organised and checked by the ref before then
allowing the free kick to be taken.
The ball hits a defender and deflects to our right wing when the
referee suddenly blows the whistle and then takes more time than
VAR checking whether a toenail was offside before then giving
the ball back to the Cardiff goalkeeper to release.
In the meantime those around me are wondering if it was a
penalty to Sunderland or a free kick for pushing to Cardiff.
All very strange and odd.

I found it very odd and can shed no further light than that!
I did think, minus that strange 3 minutes, Bond and team did
well throughout!

I also have no clue what happened there, very weird situation
especially considering if he waited 1 second the ball was dead
anyway.
I also thought he had a good game barring that, I have seen free
kicks given for the contact on the keeper but it's a good
decision not to give it in the build up to Cardiff's goal

He glanced in the direction of the touchline/benches just as the
kick was about to be taken. I wonder if the fourth official was
telling him something? Other than that...

It could be for the Cardiff 7 getting the ball full in the face
from the free kick, he initially looks a bit wobbly so perhaps
he decides to play safe and stop play. Although if that was the
case the dropped ball should be by the corner flag where it was
when he stopped play, not dropped to the keeper.

After it’s stopped he talks to Mepham and Ng who were both
pushed each other, maybe something there?

Last touch was in penalty area, so dropped ball to goalkeeper is
correct.
As for why DB stopped play... not a clue!
