Agreed. The idea has merit, but as always, an obstacle will be
put in the way to make life difficult. After all, that is what
football management is all about. I can hear the chants from the
Gresty Road ultras, "1-2-3-......"

Simple solution add the correct time on at the end of each half.
It worked well at the start of last season following the
previous summers tournament. The changes to and then reverting
back to "guessing what time to add' are an admission that's
something is wrong.
A team "hanging on "for dear life using sh..housery tactics
wouldn't be so keen to do so if an adrenaline boosting (to the
opposition) knowing 10+was to be added.
I hate spending 20+ quid to watch a keeper p..about

Yes, it will be pantomime season all year round with referees
required to lead the chants by "using a visual five-second
countdown."

The principle of turning possession over when the team in
possession wastes time has been successfully used in other
sports and should be adopted more widely in football.
In addition to the change recently announced, we could:
~ Turn over a throw-in to the other team if the taker takes too
long.
~ Turn a goal-kick into a corner if there is clear time wasting
before taking it.
~ Ditto a corner-kick into a goal-kick.
~ Free kicks can also be reversed for time-wasting.
In summery get the game going or lose possession!!

The reason it’s not enforced is (in my opinion),because the
referee’s don’t like to give an indirect free kick, something
that is so incredibly rare in the modern game - and, as much as
goalkeepers take the mick, 6 seconds or concede a free kick in
the penalty area is a very harsh consequence. Give them more
leeway, a clearly defined period of 8 seconds, or concede a
corner, of which there’s probably 10-20% chance of scoring,
seems fair and not abnormal.
There isn’t really a downside, the worst case scenario is that
it isn’t regulated and we have no change to the current affairs
when the goalkeeper holds the ball.

100% agree. Any referee (at any level) who has awarded an
indirect free-kick to the attacking team inside the penalty area
knows that it is a complete faff to organise and get taken
without encroachment, jostling and everything else in between.
That is pretty much why it does not happen; goal-keepers know
that and - as a result - push their luck. I hope that, from
next season, that luck has run out.
PS: If it were possible, I would have added the "optimistic"
emoji to my own post. But I'd rather be optimistic and proved
wrong, than cynical and proved right.

New Eight Second Law For Goalkeepers

Some good thoughts from people here. I’m all for anything that
gets the game going and hinders frustrating, unsporting acts
which losing teams get hysterical about and puts pressure on
refs (but all teams insist on doing).
Equally, any decision at the moment is seen as controversial, as
it’s never enforced properly (practically coached to not give it
at higher levels).
I also personally hate the GK faffing with the ball at his feet
to make an attacker close it down to make him pick it up. I
always then warn the captain/GK that it’s fine to do that, but
I’ll then be hot on the 6secs, as you can’t have it both ways.
That’s always accepted and usually does the trick.
I’ve always also shouted ‘take it’ or similar, if iGK seems too
long with the ball, so everyone can hear - then on rare
occasions I’ve then given 6 secs, it was seen as far less
controversial.
Unlike the good dissent / DtR clampdown which has fizzled out,
it needs to be done consistently or it’s unfair on teams who
lose matches because of it. Don’t like the countdown - as people
have said, it’s going to lead to inane counting from the stands.
Refs realistically aren’t going to time it to the millisecond
whilst running up field, so I’d realistically be aiming for
10secs in reality to make sure I was right! I can imagine some
on-screen clock for TV games as a gimmick!
I like the earlier suggestions of simply reversing decisions
like other sports - If we genuinely want to get rid of it,
that’s more likely to do it. A GK running the clock down (more
importantly slowing the momentum of the opposition) on a goal
kick in the last minute of a final is less likely to do it, if
it could be reversed to an all-hands-on-deck corner!

The statistics suggest the chance of scoring from a corner is
4%.

The ball is in play when the keeper is holding it, so there is
no mechanism for adding time on for that.
I observed a referee who penalised the keeper for holding it for
more than 6 seconds, and asked him after what the caution was
for to which he replied delaying the restart of play. Clearly
that was incorrect as you can't restart something that hasn't
stopped.
