Fairly good performance from Robert Massey Elliot at Aldershot
today some good decision and allowed home side a quick free kick
which the away side weren’t happy but you need to be on focused
at all times give a red card to an away side player which was
correct decision for me and overall good game

Cheltenham Town (First Team) v Colchester United FC (First Team)
       Football League 2
       Referee: Mather, Simon
       Assistant Referee: Allen, Ashley
       Assistant Referee: Stonier, Paul
       Fourth Official: Bickle, Oliver
I’m particularly happy that we won this game, so to avoid sour
grapes, but that was nothing short of dreadful from Simon Mather
yesterday, the worst i’ve seen this season. He’s been pretty
good in the games i’ve seen previously, but my word, that was
       awful.
The main crux of the issue was simply setting a bar of tolerance
way too high, it was more akin to a wrestling match and just
made for shocking viewing, with shirts visibly being stretched
off of backs at least 15 times over the course of the game with
no fouls being given. Most of this was outside the penalty box,
so addressing early would have made it a much more watchable
game. Then he’d follow up by giving a free kick for a minor bit
of contact between shoulders or something of the like. AR1 by
the away fans was particularly at the other end of the spectrum
and flagged for a few very soft free kicks.
The other issue was 2 or 3 times there were head injuries and
Simon failed to stop the game. Admittedly it may have been hard
for Simon to realise the severity but he only stopped the game
when the defending team took possession. One time I believe was
when a Cheltenham player had some bad dental injuries and had to
be substituted with multiple missing teeth.
There were 2 penalty shouts, 1 well rejected and another was a
reasonable shout but i’ve not seen a replay to determine either
way. I’ll finish with a positive of good timekeeping from 4O and
good whistling and strong signalling from Simon, something that
i’ve noticed not all referees seem to have at this level.
I know shirtpulling is a bit of a hot topic and it might sound
like i’m making a fuss over nothing but that was honestly a
massively unwatchable game at times given the strikers were
being removed from the game illegally at nearly every attack.
Really disappointing from team ref and I’m completely baffled at
to why Simon seemingly consciously chose this approach

Tranmere Rovers FC v Bromley FC
       Football League 2
       Referee: Mulhall, Sam
       Assistant Referee: Sowerby, Matthew
       Assistant Referee: Williams, Ceri
       Fourth Official: Smith, Daniel
I read elbee94's last report with interest as there were similar
elements of over-tolerance in this game, which were even worse
than the rugby-style levels of grappling Adam Herczeg allowed a
couple of weeks ago. I wonder if there has been some guidance to
do this, it certainly detracts from the quality of the football
       on offer.
The start was delayed by a few minutes due to a fox on the
pitch/in the stand. When the game did commence there was an
early example of Mr Mulhall's reluctance to award a foul, with
Rovers' Morris running at pace seemingly blocked off by the
Bromley defender, but just a drop ball to the visitors. It
appeared that there was an instruction to the ARs to only use
their flag for offsides and throw-ins, as a number of what
looked like obvious infringements weren't flagged, where the
assistants looked well-placed to judge. I know there may have
been discussion over comms, but all three were sticking rigidly
to the avoid giving fouls script. There came a point quite early
in the game, when Ms Williams called the referee over due to the
amount of abuse she was getting from the Rovers fans in the
Johnny King stand. Obviously not something I condone, but it
wasn't apparent from the opposite side of the ground where my
seat is. Only 3 fouls given by half-time, which did not feel
like a reflection of what was actually happening on the pitch.
The second half continued in a similar vein. Mr Mulhall then
awarded a free-kick to Bromley, for something which looked less
of an infringement that what had gone before. Rovers reserve
keeper and coach, Joe Murphy, said something to the 4O, Daniel
Smith, who promptly called Mr Mulhall over and instant red card.
As the clock ran down, Mr Mulhall belatedly discovered his YCs,
two to Rovers players for time-wasting, one to Bromley for a
push and one for dissent. Bromley had a very strong claim for a
penalty in added time, but that was turned down too.
One other point of note, Mr Sowerby the nearside AR spitting on
a couple of occasions. From a personal experience of swallowing
a fly during a game, know this might be necessary, but hadn't
noticed any other officials doing during the match.
While I don't think this game had as many bad consequences as
the Cheltenham v Colchester match, nonetheless, also from a
winning perspective, I still feel uneasy about how this game was
handled and hope there is a stronger stance taken on obvious
       fouls going forward.

       Zac Kennard-Kettle - Salford v Crewe.
I’m really unsure of what to make of Zac’s performance
yesterday. He missed quite a few fouls, for both teams, and
didn’t add any time on. 3 mins second half, where there was
loads of subs, 2 goals, and a lot of yellows. I said 5 mins and
even that was soft! However, he had great rapport with players
and his fitness was outstanding. Crewe had a shout for a penalty
in the first half right in front of us. It was for a shove in
the back and I think that Zac got this decision wrong. It was a
complete shove which meant our attacker couldn’t get the ball.
As I’ve said before, anywhere else on the pitch it would’ve been
a foul - why’s it different when it’s in the attacking penalty
box? He dealt with handbags at the end by simply booking 2
players, one each, and Salford’s booking was completely wrong.
He should’ve booked number 25, who started the whole thing, but
booked number 6 instead. I saw the whole incident and Zac nor
AR1 were watching the incident when it started. Gosh, AR2 has
certainly seen better days! Grey hair, and I think that he
struggled to run, mostly in the warm up.

Thanks Boz. Here’s hoping that this is nothing more than a
coincidence and not some new guidelines, or the standard of
football will become farcical very quickly. In another
similarity, our 4O also had a lot of words to manage between the
two managers. Great win for Tranmere!

Colchester United FC (First Team) v Port Vale FC
       (First Team) Live on SkySports+
       Football League 2
       Referee: Bannister, Aaron
       Assistant Referee: Stokes, Joseph
       Assistant Referee: Butler, Stuart
       Fourth Official: Harrison, David
A game of two halves for Aaron and team last night. At half
time, I was getting ready to sing Aaron’s praises, he looked at
home and managed the first half perfectly. He allowed a physical
game but not stepping over the line, a really good contest and
       team ref played their part.
Second half though, things went wrong. A missed booking for each
side for blatantly breaking up a counter attack and in general,
he seemed to change that first half approach to a much more
whistle happy game. I was going to comment that it seemed like
it might be nerves in a close and tense game but Aaron’s
refereed in the EFL a lot already this season so i’m not so
sure. AR2 seemed to get quite a bit wrong as well in terms of
ball in or out of play, but he’ll always have a better view than
us supporters so i’ll give the benefit of the doubt.
This was then compounded by what in my view was a clearly
incorrect no penalty decision for a foul on Egbo by Hall. Egbo
knocked it past him but he was going to get back to the ball for
sure and Hall went to ground and took him out. Really well
placed, I’m not sure what Aaron saw to not award that. Port Vale
then scored 20 seconds later but thankfully for me and my team,
we scored ourselves just a minute later.
I’m keen to see Aaron again because that was an excellent first
half, so I think he’s got the makings of a very good referee,
but a fair bit to improve on based on the second half.
