His uncle was/is on the committee for the league. So guessing he
was doing him a favour and getting on a pitch instead of in the
gym. Fair play to him.

When I was active from the late 1950’s and into the 70’s, it was
normal regular occurrence to have a Football League official on
adjacent parks pitches and sharing the communal referees
changing room. It was great to have them around and perhaps have
a chat if you’d had a particularly challenging afternoon. Well
done Rob Jones, I wish there were more with your attitude.

League.

I agree that it’s a great gesture from Rob Jones and I think
it’s great that someone higher up the levels is giving back to
the grassroots game. It makes a great image and fair play to Rob
for doing it.
With regards to your second half of the sentence, I think it
comes down to the increasing levels of referee abuse in the
English game. Sadly, we’ve seen this rise in the grassroots game
drastically and even PL officials are getting much much more
abuse than before. I don’t think many PL refs want to go out and
about on Sunday mornings cause you never know what could happen.
Unfortunately, many fans don’t realise where the barrier is and
abuse and fighting could well happen. I agree the actions from
Jones are lovely but we won’t see it happen on a regular week to
week basis.
