Crystal Palace v Oldham, 25th April 1964
By: Acme Thunderer Date: February 24, 2025, 8:31 am
---------------------------------------------------------
I was reading some media about an 8-year old boy who had been
taken to see a crucial promotion match in the old Div 3 between
Crystal Palace and Oldham in April 1964, and his father took
some cine film footage at the game which is now amazingly on
YouTube over 60 years later. I was there too and it was a game
which the Palace had to win to pip Coventry to the Div 3 title,
but which they managed to lose 1-3 after having a half time
lead. However, the Palace were still promoted so the result
didn't really matter and we all streamed on to the pitch at the
end to celebrate, as shown in the film.
There is brief footage of the referee, looks a bit like Derek
Nippard but too early for him, and I'm wondering whether there
is anybody out there who can name this referee. JT perhaps? I'd
love to know. There is also footage of a linesman on the left
flank franctically trying to clear toilet roll paper from the
touchline, a reminder of a practice which has died out on FL
grounds. Looks a bit like John Gow but probably not. Memories of
a bygone age.
Any help would be gratefully received. Thanks. AT.

Thank you JT, I'm very grateful. And what wonderful memories the
cine film clips bring back. I'm sending you a private message.

The linesmen were -
Walter Thomas Castle of Rowhedge, near Colchester, Essex (not to
be confused with his contemporary William S. of Dudley,
Worcestershire who went on to be a F.L. referee) He was a F.L.
linesman 1954-55 to 1963-64 so this was possibly his last F.L.
match.
He was born 15th May 1919 in the Colchester area, an iron
moulder in September 1939. He married Florence Ethel Maude Isom,
a bakery assistant Q3 1940 in the same area and was living at
the Ferry Bakery in Rowhedge when he joined the F.L. list.
Florence, born 3rd April 1918, died in April 1995 and Walter in
July 1996, aged 77.
Roy Lewis Johnson of Lowestoft, Suffolk (not to be confused with
his contemporary Roland Frederick of Mickleover, Derbyshire).
This was his first season, of two, on the line before becoming a
F.L. referee for eight seasons to 1972-73.
He was born 4th June 1926 in the Bury St. Edmunds, Suffolk area
and married Olive Doreen Stevens (1930-96) there in 1950. He
died 21st October 2002, aged 76, also in Bury St. Edmunds.
