Stuart Attwell - Leeds v Sunderland

Didn’t catch the first half as I totally forgot it was on
however the second half was a very assured half of refereeing
from Mr Attwell.
Two penalty incidents which in my opinion were correctly waved
away. One for handball against Cirkin where his arm was in a
natural position by his side. One for a bit of a tussle between
Cirkin and Tanaka(?) at the back post. There is more of a case
for penalty on this one but I think it was difficult for Attwell
to see it and looked more 50/50.
All cautions were absolutely nailed on and good to see a manager
get cautioned for leaving his technical area (even though this
is never consistently applied).

How isidor was the only player booked in the incident just
before half time I have no idea, leeds player pushes a player
over and then moves his head towards isidor and other leeds
players waving imaginary cards.
Line edited out - this is a referee forum, no need for that sort
of comment here, thank you. bmb

Disagree with TA Ref the Cirkin hand ball was in front of me and
his arm clearly moved away from his body to handle the ball.
From 20 + yards away Mr Attwell was very quick to wave the
penalty appeals away not giving the assistant who was in a much
better position the chance to intervene.
Please do not make personal comments about other posters, thank
you. bmb
Overall Mr Attwell was just OK and did not add any time on for
blatant time wasting throughout the game, not that any other
refs do.

9 minutes added on in total was very generous compared to what
some games with a lot more stoppages get.

The incident I referred to in my first reply, only one yellow
card from that definitely didn’t help

Plenty of grabs by Leeds defenders to stop counter attacks went
unpunished, Jobe got booked for what was a very similar foul as
3 minutes earlier on Chris Rigg both times defender is beat it’s
a 3v4 so the defender who is beat just shoves the opponent in
the back

With the greatest respect, I’d be concerned if we’re going back
to giving handballs for incidents like this. It would’ve been
reminiscent of lockdown football and how handball was punished
back then.
It was no more than a second when the ball was kicked and
hitting Cirkin’s arm. Arm was close to the side. Too much doubt
to give a handball there for me. I would certainly be waving
that away if I’m the onfield referee.
With regards to the assistant, I think Mr Robathan would have
given his input even if it did seem Attwell waved it away
quickly.

From that incident you mentioned first, it looks like Rodon
should have been shown a card (with him and Isidor going head to
head). Apart from that, the incident was dealt with efficiently

That would have been fair, as always I will admit I’m biased
discussing the club I support but at times it felt that leniency
for Leeds continued.
When the biggest complaint is oh this should have been a yellow
card it’s also a very good game by the referee.

Thought he was absolutely brilliant. He is now the consistently
excellent referee we expected him to be all those years ago
