An Afternoon of Injuries!

Richard West is injured again, however ever cloud had a silver
lining, as I'm sure bmb is delighted to see Kav now running the
line at St Mary's!
Also Sunny Singh Gill went off in his game, with the 4O coming
on and a Walsall fam taking over on boards!

Apparently at Walsall when Mr Singh Gill was limping off with a
hamstring injury the supporters were singing " You're not fit to
referee" [emoji1]

I think it was the same set of fans who sang "can you hear
Gurnam Singh?" a few years back. Obviously some comic and
knowledgeable wit and talent amongst the West Midlands fans.

I was on the wheelchair platform right above the tech area (yes
home fans section...) so while he was 4th official I was
literally right above him. I was on my bestest behaviour! Then I
noticed him start stripping off, nudged my mate and we had a bet
on whether he was replacing Richard or Jarred. I lost the bet
and had to pay out for a chicken balti pie (ok the pie was free
but we won't tell my mate that part!!). Richard looked
absolutely gutted when he came off, hopefully it's just a twinge
or something minor but I think it may have been his calf again.
I'm convinced it was all a ploy for Kav to try and take over
Canny's undisputed spot as my fav AR!! [emoji6]
More seriously though I thought he did really well, not sure
when he last run the line but he made it look as if it hadn't
been for years!

I personally don't get why Hackett has such an issue. It's not
like officials get injured every week and officials that have
already refereed that weekend need to step in. If some
officials didn't get more than one appointment per week, we
simply wouldn't have enough officials as it would create a
domino effect that would trickle down the leagues & EFL where
referess from different levels would need to be used in various
different leagues. We would end up with inexperienced referees
in the top leagues of English Football.
Personally, I have nothing against the ideas of officials being
given more than one appointment.

Virtually nothing Hackett says is of any value. Given we have
previously seen some officials have to dash from one end of the
country to the other overnight for a 4th official appointment,
appointing someone who is already in the area seems sensible,
given the chances of them having to go on are normally very
slim.

I often disagree with him but I do think he has a point. The
travel alone can be exhausting. He had a 5hr drive yesterday,
late kickoff, post match left the ground 11pm, arrived at the
hotel 01.15/01.30. Not much recoup time to sleep, eat a proper
meal etc before arriving at St Mary’s 12.30. It was gone 6.30
when they came out of the dressing room post match. Nearer to 7
to leave for the hotel and then a 5 hour drive home. They arrive
at grounds 2.5 hours ahead of kick off, security briefing, GLT
checks, VAR comms checks and warm up, leave 1-2 hours after the
game.
Easy to say they get paid well but the lack of sleep, lack of
proper meals etc is not good for their mental health. Nor are
the long journeys on top of it. Then somewhere in there is the
physical and mental exhaustion from the match itself.

I do agree with this. I feel that if a change was to ever be
made, it should be that officials can only get a Referee + VAR
appointment instead of Referee + 4th Official.
I also think at the moment the fact we have 2 (sometimes 3 on
the odd occasion) referees primarily VAR due to injury, Tierney
& Scott, that can take multiple VAR appointments per week.
If they end up making a return to on-field officiating, that
could put more pressure, depending on who could step in to cover
those extra VAR appointments they were taking on. I haven't seen
Hooper or Bond on VAR this season yet (correct me if I am
wrong), possibly another SG2 referee could be trained up?
(Either of the Smith's, Oli Langford, etc) Or alternatively,
existing SG1 Referees could be trained (Barrott, Bramall)

I believe that in the majority of cases, for games on the South
Coast and in Suffolk (this season at least) Train or plane
travel is the preferred option rather than driving
