Dejected at such a lack of self control on the part of those
whom he was refereeing; I can believe that ?
Did Mr Oliver seek deliberately to incite a section of the crowd
? No
Did Mr Oliver start involving himself in aggressive and unseemly
behaviour ? No
Did Mr Oliver offer insulting or abusive language to anyone ?
I'm pretty sure the answer is no.
The responsibility for last night's distasteful scenes belongs
to quite a few people and I suggest Mr Oliver is not among them.

Which is precisely why the football authorities need to punish
HARD and firmly. This behaviour has to stop and it’s now down to
the relevant governing bodies to lay down a strong marker in
levying heavy and unilateral punishment.
Unfortunately, as prior experiences have shown, they won’t do it
and will sanction weak and passively.

I agree about other European referees also finding this match a
challenge. I was hugely impressed by Clement Turpin the other
night, though a different sort of match, still with its
pressures though.
Reports seem to suggest that Slot took hold of Oliver's hand in
a handshake and wouldn't let go of it while he directed some
unpleasant and insulting words to his face.
Whilst it should be highlighted that Slot was fully in the
wrong, as X clips show this morning it seems extremely similar
that Pep Guardiola done the same thing 6 years ago to Oliver at
Anfield and wasn't dealt with.
Entering the field of play to confront the match officials is a
mandatory red card in the current laws. It wasn't 6 years ago.
There's your answer.

I personally thought Oliver did ok, with what resources he had
available to him last night. He ws left hang out ot dry. All
Cards spot on, but felt like many others he should of brandished
many more.
Its a shame Gillett is a LPOOL Fan or I would of 1000% had him
on 2nd game, as his calm but 0 tolerance style is what is needed
in Game 2 ....... Brooks is the only one capable now.
This whole PGMO / PL Over Management of a game has ruined
football, last night that was clear, players expect free reign
now for everything, and soon as the screw is turned on them,
they dont know where the line is............
I personally cannot watch many premier league games anymore,
they think at the top this is what spectators want to see.....
its boring, its weak, and its making our officials look weak and
powerless, so when they react like Oliver did at the end with 4
red cards, all of a sudden the brawl that happened is forgotten
about and then becomes a Oliver problem, and people blame him
for being weak.... no he was strong !!! I loved way he went bang
bang bosh, Slot deserved the red, the handshake was a pure
mugging, and deserved a red, I would of red carded for this ..
forcible grabbing his hand!! personally again I would refuse
anyones offer of a handshake after that incident.
Only thing I think Oliver should of done different was sanction
8/9 in the first half, as opposed to 5 yellows, really throw it
out there he was going to take no sillyness..... I personally
love the Argentinean Approach to everything, which is sanction
sanction sanction.... forgot over management, its laughable, and
it makes referees look weak - give me back the days of Poll /
Elleray / Barber / Dean anyday....

It still isn't consistently applied. Referees can't just choose
when they want to apply a law. It must be done consistently.
When Arteta hounded down Attwell at Newcastle last year in an
arguably more aggressive fashion but wasn't penalised jumps to
mind. As well as Guardiola on many occasions this year, Marco
Silva has had his fair share as well.

We don't know what was said in most of the cases. Just coming
on to discuss, or even make sarky comments, might not get
classed as confronting, but there was little doubt here that
Slot confronted Oliver.

What I find interesting is the silence from the PGMOL/PL about
the sending off of Arne Slot.
I believe the PL posted that he would face a 2 game touchline
ban for foul and abusive language, but that statement was
hastily removed. This suggests either what he did or said was
more serious justifying a longer ban, or that he didn't say
anything incriminating and was potentially misheard or
misunderstood by Oliver.

Suspect it is more that it is nothing to do with the EPL, they
jumped the gun with that post. Misconduct reports go to the FA
for sanction, not to leagues, and the length of any ban will
depend on what is in Oliver's report, Slot's and Liverpool's
response to it, and any potential appeal hearing.

I agree EPL seemed to have jumped the gun, they shouldn't
comment at all until the FA process concludes IMHO.
Even if Slot said nothing at all, he clearly pulled Oliver's
arm, twice, when they shook hands. I don't get the arguments
(not that you made it by the way, just in the general response I
have seen) that it wasn't much force, or it wasn't too
aggresive. I must have missed when any level of physical
remonstration with a referee became acceptable.
I saw a prominent Liverpool twitter (X) page say "the game is
gone" if that's what Oliver sent Slot off for. Well, if the game
is remonstrating with referees in any manner, then good
riddance.

This was always going to be a tough one for Mr Oliver following
his involvement in the infamous Pickford tackle. Perhaps it
would have been wiser to appoint someone else ?

I think every SG1 referee during the course of their career is
going to hack off pretty much every club in the PL by dint of
actions taken or not taken in previous matches which the club
perceives to be unjust/game changing/ etc etc. Obviously a
referee should not be appointed to a team whom they support or
where a match has an immediate and obvious bearing on a team
they support but with that caveat I believe appointments should
be made without fear or favour and certainly not at the say so
of clubs. We really don't want to get into a situation where
some referees are informally blackballed for certain fixtures.
A previous poster has opined that Dr Gillett would be a very
good appointment for such a match were it not for the Liverpool
connection. I agree. Do we know if he is a Liverpool supporter
or has other academic links with the club because I thought
location didn't count much any more in making appointments ?
