I do have to respectfully disagree with our esteemed contributor
on some, not all, of his observations.
It’s the usual tripe from Hackett. How he can describe the
performance as weak, and suggest Oliver needs more coaching is
ridiculous.
In my view, you can’t coach any official when the players behave
disgracefully and with contempt like that.
Each situation is different, and it’s simply impossible to cover
all angles and scenarios!
Also, I wonder how Hackett would have coped in such a ferocious
and volatile atmosphere.
He also takes an unwarranted swipe at Lee Mason, suggesting
that…
“Then I look and see that Lee Mason is the head of coaching! Say
no more.”
Wasn’t it Hackett who used Mason as an official in the top
flight?!

It is rarely, if ever, that the referee is the one to have lost
his head.

I think the only occasion in many, many a year where an official
has come close in my opinion was Drysdale when Alan Judge
confronted him in 2021.

Not sure how Oliver could have made an ‘early intervention’
regarding the incident at the end. When the full time whistle
went, Doucoure immediately went to the liverpool fans and
taunted them so it would’ve been difficult for Oliver to stop
that. Once again, he can’t control the actions of Jones who went
in for Doucoure straight away. How on earth is that the fault of
Oliver’s? He had to deal with it and therefore couldn’t leave
the pitch as quickly as he would’ve hoped

I agree about other European referees also finding this match a
challenge. I was hugely impressed by Clement Turpin the other
night, though a different sort of match, still with its
pressures though.
Reports seem to suggest that Slot took hold of Oliver's hand in
a handshake and wouldn't let go of it while he directed some
unpleasant and insulting words to his face.

Whilst it should be highlighted that Slot was fully in the
wrong, as X clips show this morning it seems extremely similar
that Pep Guardiola done the same thing 6 years ago to Oliver at
Anfield and wasn't dealt with.

I was thinking if that clip as well but I’d make two points -
1. Slot may well have made a comment in addition the handshake,
we don’t know yet.
2. Referees can’t win here as two wrongs don’t make a right. I
think it’s a tad unfair to bring up an incident from many years
ago. Oliver may well have been advised that he should have
issued a red card after the first incident.
However, this will be used as another stick to beat Oliver with,
especially given the teams involved

There was the chap in France as well who kicked/tripped the
player.

Dejected at such a lack of self control on the part of those
whom he was refereeing; I can believe that ?
Did Mr Oliver seek deliberately to incite a section of the crowd
? No
Did Mr Oliver start involving himself in aggressive and unseemly
behaviour ? No
Did Mr Oliver offer insulting or abusive language to anyone ?
I'm pretty sure the answer is no.
The responsibility for last night's distasteful scenes belongs
to quite a few people and I suggest Mr Oliver is not among them.

At what point have I stated what both sets of players was right
and proper? That's right - I haven't!
As I said on my previous post and as has been suggested by other
members, the key mistake here was appointing Oliver to this
fixture. He's had a season in the spotlight for arguably the
wrong reasons and needed this game which (predictably) boiled
over like a hole in the head.

I think any comparison with international officials is always
going to be skewed as we see Oliver basically every week and
will only see European elite officials a few days a year. I'm
sure Turpin and Marciniak have had some shockers in their
domestic league that we never see!

I didn't watch this match and have only seen the scenes at the
end on news programmes, however, the lack of discipline in a lot
of football at all levels is certainly not good for the game.
Something similar to the events last night, apart from the
inciting of the crowd, occurred in a local football match and
comments on social media led me to post the following:-
You know that it is always the ref's fault and I never saw him
commit one foul, dive when nobody was near him, try to pinch 20
yards on every throw in, kick anybody, hurl abuse at anybody,
waste time, dispute any decision etc., etc. ---however, it will
all be his fault!
The game is becoming less appealing at many levels because too
many players are intent on trying to con the officials instead
of just getting on with the game and accepting decisions made in
all honesty by the officials.
Thank goodness that Super League starts tonight, that is worth
watching.
