I have never seen Matt Donohue have a good game. Way out of his
depth tonight, it’s a mystery how he was ever considered for PL
appointments

Respectfully disagree with some of the posts that Matt Donohue
is out of his depth and has lost control. If the players want to
misbehave, as has happened in the second half, then they should
expect to be sanctioned, as did happen.
He is an experienced Championship referee on the fringes of
getting promotion to SG1 and he has handled matters well. The
cautions were necessary and it could have got out of control but
it hasn’t.
Agree that the potential red card wasn’t a red card, it was an
unfortunate accident, a collision and no intent to injure the
opponent.
A cracking good cup tie to boot.

First of all, an absolute wonder of a cup tie. Proper proper
game of football feeling a bit like football from years ago.
Kudos to both teams for a great game and a good TV pick from the
BBC as well.
I actually thought the way Matt Donohue refereed the game aided
the spectacle. Does that mean I think he had a great game? No
not entirely. Most cautions were absolute musts but I think he
did miss a few incidents as well. No one will ever know whether
that ball crossed the line for Newcastle’s first because it is
so difficult to call (related to AR not Donohue). I think
Donohue was inconsistent at times (with poor challenges and poor
play acting) but as others have said he will learn from it and
become a better official for it. By no means absolute terrible
but not great either.

The cost of GLT for each ground about ten years ago was about
£250,000. That will not have decreased in that time. When
Ipswich had a spell in League One the GLT cameras and equipment
was removed, presumably it was transferred to a team promoted to
the Championship.

Not entirely convinced by Donohue but don't assume I am
criticising him. It's the first time I have really watched him
and this was a cracking if fiesty game. I have to take account
of the fact that even the top officials are letting more go and
are trying to avoid too many cards. It can be difficult if the
players aren't engaging with the referee.
I need to observe him again but as others have said, you need
games like this to improve. And I was entertained.

Who pays for it? If it’s the clubs then do they get some money
back if it’s subsequently removed? Bit harsh if not!!

Didn’t see the game but the bar I was in had it on, there was
one really bad tackle from a Birmingham player around the 70-75
min mark that went completely unpunished. Should have been a red
card for SFP.
I know it’s a cup game but it adds to the list of red card
offences that have gone unpunished today
